BlackBerry Sales Soar

RIM, the makers of the BlackBerry smartphone, has announced a massive increase in revenue for the fist fiscal quarter of 2009. At $2.24 billon, it was up from $1.08 billion from the same quarter last year, ZDNet reports.

During the quarter the company shipped 5.4 million handsets, a healthy increase from the four million of the previous quarter. BlackBerry added 2.3 million subscribers in the first quarter of this year, bringing their total up to 16 million.

RIM to Restate Financials, Lose Chairman

Canada’s Research in Motion (RIM), makers of the popular BlackBerry mobile email and smartphone devices, is the latest company to be bruised by investigations into the granting of stock options and the impact of those options on corporate financial statements. In an announcement today, RIM says it will restate its financials going as far back as its 2004 fiscal year to correct reporting errors in the way stock option grants were handled; further, co-CEO Jim Balsillie is stepping down from his role as chairman of the company’s board of directors.

BlackBerry Tops 5 Mln Subscribers

In its report for its 2006 fiscal year, Canada’s Research in Motion reports that the company earned more than $2 billion in revenue during the fiscal year, and, despite uncertainties surrounding the company’s bitter, long-running battle with patent holding company NTP, the subscriber base for the company’s signature BlackBerry wireless service grew to over 5 million.

“Our strong market position together with our continuing technology leadership and our unique ability to provide customers and partners with a comprehensive wireless solution presents great opportunity for RIM in the new fiscal year,” said Jim Balsillie, RIM’s Chairman and Co-CEO.

Yahoo! Digs Into BlackBerries

Yahoo! and Research in Motion today expanded their relationship in a bid to bring more of the online portal’s services to users of RIM’s BlackBerry devices. This expanded relationship covers four areas: Yahoo! Go for Mobile, Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger.

Under the terms of the updated relationship, the two companies said, Yahoo! and RIM are working together to bring Yahoo! Go for Mobile to the BlackBerry platform. This service integrates a full range Yahoo!’s products into a single application. Upcoming Yahoo! Mail improvements will allow users to experience real-time delivery of e-mail messages sent to their Yahoo! Mail accounts and better wireless synchronization of sent and deleted items as well as read/unread message status.

Palm to Add BlackBerry Software to Treo 650

Palm, Inc. and Canada’s Research In Motion have announced they’re working to put BlackBerry Connect software on palm’s Treo 650 smartphone, and hope to have the combined product available to consumers in early 2006.

“Treo 650 has earned accolades as the best fully featured smartphone available, and we’re thrilled to make it even better by answering customer requests and offering RIM’s BlackBerry email solution for businesses,” said Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm, Inc.

New Siemens Phone Integrates Blackberry

Research In Motion (RIM) today introduced a new licensing program that allows other device manufacturers to incorporate BlackBerry software applications in addition to supporting BlackBerrywireless services. Through the BlackBerry Built-In licensing program, mobile device manufacturers can incorporate various BlackBerry applications into their own phones or handheld devices includingBlackBerry Email, BlackBerry Calendar and BlackBerry Browser applications. The Siemens SK65, launched today, is the first mobile phone to feature BlackBerry Built-In technology.
