Samsung Starts Shipping 32 GB moviNAND Flash

South Korean electronics giant Samsung has announced it is now shipping its 32 GB moviNAND flash storage products, doubling the capacity of its previously high-density 16 GB moviNAND products. The new 32 GB memory is built using a 30 nm process rather than the 40 nm technology used in Samsung’s previous moviNAND products; the upshot is that OEMs now have an option for packing twice as much flash storage in the same area—and that means more music, videos, and data storage for everyone.

Samsung Now Producing 256 GB SSDs

Samsung Now Producing 256 GB SSDs

Remember back in May when Samsung announced it would be launching 256 GB solid state drives? Samsung had originally planning to launch the drives in September, but today Samsung made good on the promise, announcing it has started production on the units, meaning they should start appearing as options for both notebook and desktop PCs in the near future—although we don’t think they’ll be cheap.

“While SSD’s have always been touted for their performance, Samsung is turning the storage industry upside down now with an SSD that delivers truly disruptive performance,” said Samsung Semiconductor VP for memory marketing Jim Elliott, in a statement. “Getting our exceptionally high performing 256GB SSD in a notebook is analogous to having a 15,000 rpm drive, without all of its size, noise, power, and heating drawbacks.”

Samsung Cheapens SSDs for Netbook Market

Samsung Cheapens SSDs for Netbook Market

With new Asus-Eee-style netbooks popping up every day, the market for small, cheap solid-state drives is booming, and Samsung is hopping in. Moving away from its prior emphasis on faster, larger drives for consumer applications, Samsung on Tuesday revealed a new line of inexpensive SATA II drives specifically tailored for miniature notebooks.

The drives will be 30 percent smaller than standard traditional 2.5-inch drives thanks to Samsung’s multi-level cell technology, the same wizardry it used to cut size and cost on its 128GB drives. Compared to Samsung’s latest offerings, which stretch up to 256GB, the drives will come in relatively small capacities of 32GB, 16GB, and 8GB. While all three will post read speeds of 90MB/s, write speeds will depend on size, with the largest drive offering the fastest specs: 70MB/s.

Producing solid-state drives (SSDs) with more and more storage is old news: Samsung is moving on to making them faster. On Monday, the company revealed new 64GB 1.8- and 2.5-inch drives with a SATA II interface that can write data at 100 MBps and read it at 120 MBps – twice as fast as the SATA I interface that has been used in SSDs up to this point.

Samsung Mass Producing 64 GB SSD

Samsung Mass Producing 64 GB SSD

Back in March, Samsung announced plans to produce a 64 GB flash-based solid state drive as a drop-in replacement for traditional hard drives in notebooks computers and other system. The company said the drive would ship to system makers in the second quarter of 2007: today, the company made good on that promise, announcing the 1.8-inch 64 GB solid state drive has gone into mass production. According to the company, the move makes Samsung the largest producer of high-capacity SSDs in the world.
