Android Makes Up One-Fifth Of T-Mobile U.K. Contracts

The G1 Android phone, still the only one on the market to use Google’s Android software, was a big boost for T-Mobile UK in 2008. It now accounts for 20% of all the company’s contract sales, according to the 2008 financial figures issued by T-Mobile. The company began exclusively offering the G1 in October.

In a statement, Jim Hyde, T-Mobile UK’s chief executive, said:

"The successful launch of the Android-based G1 in October and the ongoing demand for mobile broadband services had a positive impact on the latter half of 2008."

If you’re looking for an Android phone, you might want to take a trip to Walmart.

550 of its stores are now selling the phone at a lower price than T-Mobile, the company told Dow Jones. While the network operator charges $179.99 for the handset, Walmart has it on sale for $148.88 with a two-year contract.

Walmart hasn’t said whether it plans to sell the phone in more stores in the US.

In a related story, the T-Mobile G1 has gone on sale in the UK, Vnunet reports. It’s available free of charge with a $70 a month contract.

U.K. HSUPA For T-Mobile

Super 3-G, which allows for fast mobile broadband downloads, also known as HSDPA, or high speed downlink pack access, is all over the UK. That’s fine for anyone wanting to download content to their phones or laptops. But what about those who need to upload it? They’ve had to watch the progress bar move along at a snail’s pace. Until now.

Today’s the day T-Mobile rolls out its high speed upload packed access (HSUPA), claiming to be the first service to offer it there, according to ZDNet. It predicts speeds of 1.4 Mbps, and has tweaked its HSDPA to offer speeds of around 4.5 Mbps.
