China Censoring Skype

China Censoring Skype

A Canadian research group called Citizen Lab, which is associated with the University of Toronto, has turned up a publicly available Chinese database that not only contains literally thousands of politically sensitive words blocked by the state, but also the names and details of Skype subscribers, meaning that the state has been censoring and blocking VoIP Skype calls and texts, according to the BBC.

Citizen Lab says the Chinese system picks up and stores messages using the sensitive terms, and has over 150,000 in its database – which seems to be not especially secure, according to Citizen Lab’s Breaching Trust report.

Skype Gets New COO

Skype Gets New COO

It’s been a year of change at VoIP company Skype. First they appointed a new president, Josh Silverman, in March. Then they announced the beta of their Skype 4.0 upgrade. And now they’ve got a new chief operating officer in Scott Durschlag, who arrives after spending five years as part of Motorola’s Mobile Devices management team.

"I believe in Skype not only because I’ve been a user since the early days, but because I’m convinced the opportunities ahead for Skype are tremendous given how the world is changing," said Durchslag.

Skype Begins Testing 4.0

Skype Begins Testing 4.0

Reuters has reported that Skype has begun public testing of its Skype 4.0 software, which is intended to make video a more vital part of the communications process. Instead of being in a small corner, the video can now be full screen, and with a much greater resolution under the new software. To be fair, video calling isn’t new on Skype – it’s offered it since 2005 – but doing it this way marks a step forward, largely because 28% of all calls on the service are video calls.

eBay Names New Skype, Shopping.com CEOs

Online auction leader eBay has appointed new CEO’s for its Skype and Shopping.com subsidiaries. Skype’s new CEO will be Josh Silverman, who’s currently CEO of Shopping.com, while eBay vet Andre Haddad will take over the reigns of Shopping.com.

“We’re honored and excited to welcome Josh to Skype as CEO. He has an outstanding track record of entrepreneurial leadership and managing diverse, fast-growing businesses,” said Ebay President and CEO-elect John Donahoe. “We look forward to working with him as Skype continues to innovate and build out its next stage of growth.”
