Starbucks Giving Away Songs on iTunes

Highlighting the company’s new partnership with Apple which will provide iPhone and iPod touch users with free Wi-Fi access to the iTunes music store, coffee retailer Starbucks is planning to give away millions of cards good for selected songs from Apple’s iTunes store.

Starbucks says it plans to give away 1.5 million downloads per day from October 2 through November 7 at more than 10,000 Starbucks locations in the United States, for a total of over 50 million songs. The cards will be redeemable on the iTunes store for a complimentary song selected by the Starbucks Entertainment division. The first free song will be Bob Dylan’s “Joker Man,” and subsequent selections are expected to dip into Starbucks’ own catalog of music content (including its recent distribution arrangement with ex-Beatle Paul McCartney) as well as highlight artists like Joni Mitchell, Joss Stone, John Mayer, Annie Lennox, and Band of Horses.

Apple Launches DRM-Free iTunes Plus

Apple today launched iTunes Plus, a new addition to its existing iTunes service which offers AAC music tracks from major label EMI at 256 Kbps encoding (twice the rate of standard iTunes purchases) at $1.29 per track—and without Apple’s FairPlay digital rights management (DRM) technology. That means users can play iTunes Plus tracks on any music player (or using any application) which supports AAC encoding, rather than the tracks being restricted to playback using iTunes or Apple iPods.

“This is a tremendous milestone for digital music,” said Eric Nicoli, CEO of EMI Group. “Consumers are going to love listening to higher quality iTunes Plus tracks from their favorite EMI artists with no usage restrictions.”

Amazon to Offer DRM-Free MP3 Music

Amazon.com has announced it plans to launch a digital music store later this year offering music from EMI Music and over 12,000 other music labels for sale in DRM-free, MP3 format. The move follows EMI’s announcement last month that it would be offering its entire music catalog via Apple’s iTunes service in a DRM-free AAC format—at a premium price, although at twice the resolution of FairPlay-protected downloads.
