EU Approves Mobile Roaming Charge Cut

European MPs have overwhelmingly voted to lower the roaming charges for calls and text messages in Europe. By 646-22 they passed the bill that had already been approved by EU telecoms ministers.

This means that the roaming cost of a text will drop in July from 29 euro cents to 11 cents (about 14 cents US), while roaming calls will go from 46 euro cents per minute for an outgoing voice call to 43 cents. Voice calls received while abroad will drop from the current 22 cents to 19 cents in July and 11 cents by July 2011.

July 1 was the deadline set by the European Union for mobile operators across the continent to cut the roaming cost of sending text messages across the EU. Additionally, operators had been told to slash the cost of phone data usage, including Internet access, when abroad.

If the mobile operators don’t change their prices voluntarily, the EU has warned it will enact legislation to force the issue. No details about co-operation had been revealed, but the BBC reported that it was believed operators had agreed to a sufficient reduction to satisfy lawmakers.

Fourth of July Comet Coverage

Akamai Technologies, Inc. and eTouch systems are providing extra bandwidth for the space agency’s Deep Impact spacecraft mission, which is set to launch a projectile into the surface of comet Tempel 1 during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

NASA will be Webcasting live a pre-impact briefing at 1 p.m. EDT on July 1 and a pre-impact update at 1 p.m. EDT on July 3. The expected time of impact is 1:52 a.m. EDT July 4. A post-impact briefing will be held at 4 a.m. July 4. A post-impact press conference will follow at 2 p.m. EDT July 4.

Apple Changes 90 Day iPod Phone Support

“According to Apple’s iPod FAQ page, buyers of fourth-generation “click wheel” iPods, as well as iPod minis sold on or after July 24, receive a “single incident” of complimentary telephone support. Customers can use their single incident within the first 90 days.

Previously, Apple had offered 90 days of unlimited telephone support, with no cap on the number of incidents. iPod minis sold before July 24 as well as older iPod models continue to offer the old phone support terms.”
