Jupiter: TV Time and Online Time Now Equal

A new study from JupiterResearch shows that the Internet is rapidly becoming the most important media format for U.S. consumers: according to Jupiter, U.S. consumers now spend an average of 14 hour per week online, the same amount of time they spend watching television.

The report shows that Internet use is displacing traditional print media (books, magazines, and newspapers), radio, and even television as the U.S. consumers’ preferred media outlet. Jupiter found that books are seeing the most significant decline, with 37 percent of online users surveyed reporting that they spend less time reading books because of the amount of time they spend online.

1,000 Song Limit Makes Sense For Many

A report published by Jupiter Resarch and reported by CNET News.com shows that 90 percent of respondents to a survey have no more than 1,000 digital songs on their computers.

77 percent of the consumers Jupiter questioned said they’d be interested in purchasing a portable media player with a capacity of 1,000 songs. The 4GB hard drive included in Apple Computer’s iPod Mini, and in MP3 players from some Apple rivals, holds roughly that number of songs.

We want PC-based entertainment centers

More than half of online consumers would record programs and movies on their PCs if they could play back the content on a standard television, a market-research firm said Tuesday.

The finding of a consumer poll by Jupiter Research is good news for Microsoft’s Windows XP Media Center Edition, which Jupiter expects to become the standard operating system for midlevel PCs and some desktop replacement notebooks over the next 12 to 18 months.

Based on the July online poll, Jupiter found 51% of consumers willing to record content on their PCs for playback on their TVs. But only 34% were willing to download TV content to watch on their desktops.
