The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project has announced that current CFO Charles Kane will be stepping into the roles of President and Chief Operating Officer of the organization as the non-profit looks to put recent snafus and key personnel losses behind then. OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte will stay on board as Chairman, and will focus on fundraising and promoting OLPC to world governments; Kane will assume responsibility for all OLPC operations, as well as negotiating agreements with third parties.

GameSpot Denies Bending to Advertisers
After taking heavy criticism from gamers and industry bloggers for firing seasoned game reviewer Jeff Gerstmann last week, GameSpot issued a statement on Tuesday denying that the decision had anything to do with advertising dollars. Critics allege that Gerstmann was fired for a negative review of Kane & Lynch, which clashed with a massive advertising investment in GameSpot from the game’s publisher.
“Due to legal constraints and the company policy of GameSpot parent CNET Networks, details of Gerstmann’s departure cannot be disclosed publicly,” GameSpot’s statement said. “However, contrary to widespread and unproven reports, his exit was not a result of pressure from an advertiser.”
Command & Conquer 3 Expansion Announced
A video game villain first introduced over a decade ago is back for yet another round. Electronic Arts announced on Wednesday that an expansion pack for the recently released Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is in the works, and it will center on everyone’s favorite overacting evil leader: Kane.
Command and Conquer: Wrath of Kane will take players through 20 years in the C&C universe, from the rebirth of the Brotherhood of Nod following the Second Tiberium War, through the Third Tiberium War, and on. The game’s trademark cut scenes will return, featuring Joe Kucan as Kane, the original actor who has played him in every C&C game since the original.
Tiberium Wars Hits the Xbox 360
The third installment of Electronic Arts’ Command & Conquer real-time strategy game series is now available for the Xbox 360. Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars takes the franchise back to its beginnings in the Tiberium universe and finds the the self-replicating green alien goo has infected the planet Earth. An alliance of nations plans to defend the planet, but the Command & Conquer villain Kane has some other ideas.
According to Electronic Arts, the Xbox 360 demo of Tiberium Wars was the most-downloaded EA demo during its first week of availability, and was one of the top-played demos on Xbox Live.
EA Announces Command & Conquer 3
Electronic Arts today announced the third installment of its Command & Conquer real-time strategy series is being developed for a 2007 release on Windows PCs. Tentatively titled Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, the new installment plans to take the series back to its beginnings in the Tiberium universe, spotlighting fluid gameplay and an engaging story.
“Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars combines fast-paced gameplay with new ways to tell a story in an RTS game,” said Mike Verdu, Executive Producer at EA Los Angeles. “We’re building a next generation Command & Conquer game that is true to the spirit of this classic franchise, but is updated with state-of-the-art visuals, added strategic depth, and gameplay innovations that will move the genre forward.”
