There’s no doubt that external hard drives are very useful tools for everyone from computing professionals down to the technologically timid—but anyone who’s used them knows they tend to stay on all the time, suckng power even if there’s no computer attached to them, or if they’re unused for for hours, days, or even weeks. To that end, storage and security vendor Kanguru has announced its new Kanguru Eco Drive, which is not only manufactured to be RoHS compliant and avoid the use of hazardous materials, but sports three power saving modes which can reduce the drive’s power consumption by up to 75 percent compared to a typical hard drive—which also translates to a longer operational life for the drive.

Kanguru Unveils SATA/USB 2.0 External Drive
Kanguru Solutions, a maker of computer storage and security peripherals, today announced they’d added a new external combination Serial ATA and USB 2.0 hard drive to their line up of products. This latest Kanguru QuickSilver is available now in different storage sizes (80GB to 500GB) and price ranges ($139.95 to $529.95).
The Kanguru QuickSilver (SATA/USB 2.0) external hard drive, said Kanguru, is capable of getting hard drive transfer rates up to 1.5GB per second via the SATA interface. This drive is targeted towards video creation, editing and production, graphic design and gaming.
Kanguru Offering 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drives
Kanguru’s USB 2.0 thumb drives can hook to a keychain and fit in a pocket and come in sizes ranging from 32MB to 4GB. The company also claims up to 8GB of data can be stored on the 4GB model with Kanguru’s compression technology.
With prices around $1600 and higher for the 4GB version, the drive will be out of most people’s price range.
