Google CEO Won’t Quit Apple Board

Google CEO Won

The Federal Trade Commission is looking at it as a possible breach of antitrust laws, but Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, is adamant that he won’t quit his position on the board of Apple.

Schmidt said:

"If there are issues on competitiveness, I recuse myself."

And those issues are definitely there, given that Google has the Chrome and Android OS, while Apple offers Safari – he also leaves the boardroom when talk turns to the iPhone.

"From my perspective I don’t think Google sees Apple as a primary competitor," he told journalists prior to addressing Google shareholders, according to the BBC. Google’s legal counsel, Kent Walker, noted:

UK Mobile Internet Use Grows

The number of people in the UK going online from their PCs is slowing, while the figures are soaring for mobile Internet use, according to a new survey conducted by Nielsen Online.

The figure for PC users accessing the Net grew by just 3% in the second and third quarters, while for mobile users the numbers soared by 25%, for a total of 7.3 million people, according to the BBC.

The most popular sites for mobile users was BBC News, followed by BBC Weather and Sky Sports, compared to Google for desktop users.

BT Trials Phorm After Six-Month Delay

It was supposed to begin in April, but was put on hold, supposedly for technical reasons. It’s drawn a massive fallout of criticism and it’s being investigated by the European Commission. But now British Telecom (BT) is going ahead with its third trial of the Phorm ad-serving technology, known as Webwise.

Those taking Phorm will get a unique identifier that tracks their browsing habits online and targets ads to them, according to ZDNet.

According to BT:

"Around 10,000 customers will be invited to opt in to the trial when they commence their browsing session. We will issue invitations at random."

Online Ad System Phorm Problematic

Since it signed up three British ISPs – BT, Virgin, and CarphoneWarehouse – to a trial of its online ad system, Phorm has been coming under fire.   The idea itself is very clever, as it matches a user’ssurfing habits with ad channels in order to produce personally targeted ads, using keywords in the sites visited.   However, although Phorm has been praised by some for its data protection, itwas rapped at a meeting for its security problems. According to the BBC, at a meeting, Dr Richard Clayton, a Cambridge University professor and treasurer of theFoundation for Information Policy Research, explained that when a user visits a page, in some instances a request will bounced between Phorm and the page three times before completion, which left itopen to hacking. He’d been invited by the company to look at Phorm’s architecture.   "I don’t think it improves the stability of the internet," he said.  Phorm’s chief executive, Kent Ertegrul, explained this happened in under 1% of cases, and didn’t affect the user experience. He also said that after taking legal advice, he was satisfiedthat Phorm didn’t break any UK privacy laws, and actually had the power to transform the Net.   "The internet today is two to three professionals – Microsoft, Yahoo and Google – and 9,999,999 hobbyists. Phorm makes all websites capable ofmaking a living."

McAfee Marks $13.8 Mln to Settle Stock Case

McAfee Marks $13.8 Mln to Settle Stock Case

Antivirus and security vendor McAfee is one o more than 100 U.S. companies (including Apple and Dell) to have been investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in regard to option backdating, a practice whereby stock options granted to executives and employees are backdated in a way which makes the grant most advantageous to the employees. There’s nothing illegal about backdating, per se, so long as its impact on a company’s overall financial status is fully disclosed. The problem is that many companies didn’t seem to get that, with the result that the value of backdated options was not accurately reflected on company balance sheets. And that is (potentially) accounting fraud.

Seagate Encrypted Hard Drives Go to ASI

Seagate Encrypted Hard Drives Go to ASI

Recent revelations of stolen and missing laptops from corporations and government agencies—some of which have carried personal information on millions of Americans—has strengthened demands for data security technologies…particularly for notebooks and other portable systems. To that end, drive maker Seagate announced today that it is shipping its Momentus 5400 FDE.2 drive to ASI Computer Technology for use in the company’s C8015 "whitebook" notebook computer.

ASI markets computers under its own brand and acts as a channel partner for smaller-name PC makers. Other computer manufacturers are expected to begin offering Seagate’s encryption-capable drives in the coming months.

SpiralFrog, Universal Team for Free Music

SpiralFrog, a new digital music service, announced today that it plans to launch a music download service which will make Vivendi Universal’s music catalog available for free, legal download in the United States and Canada. Universal is home to some of the world’s top-selling music acts, including Irish supergroup U2, as well as pop diva Gwen Stefani and “indie” sensation The Killers.

SpiralFrog expects to enter a beta phase by the end of 2006; according to SpiralFrog’s release, SpiralFrog will offer legal versions of music and video tracks from the Universal library at no cost, aiming to offer a simple alternative to pirate music sites and peer-to-peer networks carrying unauthorized versions of songs. SpiralFrog will earn its money—and, presumably, pay Universal and its artists—through an advertiser-based revenue sharing model.
