Dell Settles Finance Claims for $3.35 Mln

Computer maker Dell has agreed to pay some $3.35 million to settle 34 states’ allegations that the company’s warranty, financing, and rebate offers were deceptive and misled consumers. The agreement has Dell paying $1.5 million into a restitution account; impacted consumers will be able to submit claims for compensation. The other $1.85 million will go towards the states’ legal costs.

“More than the money, this agreement provides profoundly important business practice reforms,” said Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal, in a statement. “No more bait-and-switch financing—offers touting zero-interest that become surprise high-interest charges or astounding late penalties. Our strong coalition of states will closely monitor and enforce this agreement, which has been reached with Dell’s cooperation.”

Kentucky To Grab Gambling Domains

It might sound a little bizarre, but it’s true. A Kentucky court has said that the state is within its rights to grab the domain names of 141 different gambling sites in order to protect its citizens, since the state forbids gambling.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear said:

“Unlicensed, unregulated, illegal Internet gambling poses a tremendous threat to the citizens of the Commonwealth because of its ease, availability and anonymity. The owners and operators of these illegal sites prey on Kentucky citizens, including our youth, and deprive the Commonwealth of millions of dollars in revenue. It’s an underworld wrought with scams and schemes.”

On June 5 Kentucky’s Attorney General, Jack Conway, announced the introduction of a cyber crime unit in the state, and it began operations only last week, with a focus on identity theft.

Now it certainly has a crime to investigate, as Conway himself has been a victim of ID theft.

He discovered the problem when his credit card was refused by iTunes, and he says thieves used his stolen credit card to spend thousands of dollars on postal charges, Vonage service, and on computers.

Now the new unit is investigating.

Wikipedia Vandalism Strikes Comedian Sinbad

The great thing about the online encyclopedia Wikipedia is that anyone can edit it…and the bad thing about the online encyclopedia Wikipedia is that anyone can edit it. At the same time the project invites members of the online community to share their knowledge and contribute their expertise, it also attracts the cranks, hooligans, and outright fraud come out of the woodwork to alter, falsify, and flat-out vandalize articles. The latest incident appears to have targeted the 50 year-old U.S. comedian Sinbad (real name David Adkins), when someone altered the Wikipedia entry on him to say he’d died of a heart attack the morning of March 14.

FCC Will Support Broadband Over Powerlines

BPL will provide consumers nationwide with high-speed Internet access through their existing electrical outlets. BPL also assists utilities with critical intelligence to enhance the security, reliability and efficiency of the U.S. electric power grid.

“This is one of the defining moments for the widespread adoption of broadband by Americans, and a great testament to the FCC’s leadership and to the cooperation and support of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Today’s FCC decision is as significant as the Commission’s decision a decade ago to foster competition in the mobile telephone and video programming businesses, through PCS and direct broadcast satellite licensing,” said William Berkman, Chairman of CURRENT Communications Group, a BPL service operator in the residential and small business markets. “The fact is that BPL does ‘double duty,’ enabling two critical infrastructure improvements – it gives our nation a viable new broadband alternative and it enables significant modernization of the nation’s electric distribution system.”
