Although MMORPGS like World of Warcraft have enjoyed popularity in the North American market, Asia has long been the leading market for MMORPGs, with a dizzying variety of games and virtual worlds. Now Gala-net, a leader in bringing free-to-play online games to western markets via its gPotato site, has announced plans to bring the Korean fantasy MMORPG Aika to the North American market. Aika is published by Hanbitsoft in South Korea, and promises to feature serious player-versus-player action, ranging from dungeon groups of as few as six players all the way up to massive wars with 1,000 players on each side.

Google might be one of the top players in the industry in many parts of the world, but in South Korea its market share can be fairly described as “tiny”—and South Korea is the one of the largest online markets in the world. Embedded SD Card Standard Announced

Embedded SD Card Standard Announced

The SD Card Association has announced (PDF) it will enter the embedded storage market this November with an Embedded SD standard. The idea behind using SD for embedded storage is to simplify the design of things like mobile phones and portable media players by enabling manufacturers to use a single interface for both embedded and removable storage. The Embedded SD standard separated flash memory management from the host, establishes a mechanical and electrical framework for embedded storage (it’ll support both 3.3 and 1.8 Volt power supplies), offer power management and a sleep mode, plus enable devices to boot from embedded SD storage.

As much as some of us might dislike them, there’s one undeniable advantage to hardware-based buttons and keys, whether they’re dimples or keycaps or blisters or switches: most of the time, you can fee what you’re doing. So if you’ve ever tried using a touchscreen-enabled phone or other portable device and thought to yourself, "Gosh, this is awkward, I can’t feel what I’m doing!" then Samsung might have a solution for you.

Cnet Journalist James Kim Found Dead

We are saddened to report that James Kim, a father, husband and peer of ours in the technology journalism field has passed away at the too early of an age of 35-years-old. Kim and his family were on their way to a resort on the Oregon coast when they became lost on the backroads in the mountains. A massive search effort turned up Kim’s wife and two children, but Kim himself had wandered off to find help for his family. A trail Kim left behind to help searchers find him ultimately led them to him, but not in time to save him. The Digitial Trends staff expresses their greatest condolences to the Kim family, his friends and the staff of Cnet as we join all of you in mourning his passing.

Intel Launches New Logo and Brand Renewal

Intel Launches New Logo and Brand Renewal

In an effort to reflect the company’s shift towards the general consumer marketplace, chip-maker Intel Corporation is expected to formally launch a major re-branding effort at January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, scrapping its 37 year-old logo (the company name with a lowered “e”) and limiting use of the phrase Intel Inside.

Intel’s new all-blue logo will feature an elliptical swirl around the company’s name, while the tagline Leap ahead will replace Intel Inside in consumer-oriented products and marketing tools, although the company’s 1990’s catchphrase will remain part of marketing programs used by computer makers to promote systems with Intel processors (although new logo graphics making the rounds on the Internet largely use only the word “inside” for specific processor lines). Intel also seems intent on marketing its anticipated “Yonah” mobile processor under name “Core.”
