Azureus Vuze Brings on the HD Video

Azureus has taken the wraps off Vuze, a media-friendly revamp of the Zudeo peer-to-peer file sharing application—and it aims to make distributing long-form, high-definition video via the Internet a reality.

“Vuze recognizes that the next generation online video experience lies within the integration of licensed and self-published content showcased in a theater-like viewing environment,” said Gilles BianRosa, CEO of Azureus. “The millions who make up the Vuze community—publishers, editors and viewers—can share long-form video and download licensed content, and experience it in high definition on their own computer or plasma screen.”

CBS Counts on Electric Sheep

CBS Counts on Electric Sheep

Broadcast television network CBS has bought into a $7 million round of financing for virtual content developer Electric Sheep, which develops properties and presences in online worlds like Linden Lab’s Second Life.

Electric Sheep has developed virtual properties for Fortune 500 companies including AOL, NBC, Viacam, and others, including several in-world creations in Second Life to promote Major League Baseball, MTV’s Laguna Beach, Showtime’s The L Word, and promotion for the movie Smokin’ Aces. Electric Sheep also developed Reuters’ Second Life in-world news bureau. Electric Sheep has previously worked with CBS in Second Life to develop The L Word’s in-world present, and film an in-world commercial for its TV show Two and a Half Men; the company is currently working on a Star Trek-themed build.

Showtime for Amazon Unbox

Amazon.com announced today that original programming from the Showtime premium cable network is now available for digital download via Amazon’s Unbox online video service.

The deal puts programming from Showtime original series Weeds,Sleeper Cell,Dave Chapelle’s ‘For WhatIt’s Worth’,Fat Actress,Penn & Teller: BS! and Free for All online for $1.99 per episode. Hit series The L Word is also part of the deal, marking the first time the series has been available for (legal) download anywhere.

Google, YouTube Sign with the Majors

While rumors of a possible Google acquisition of YouTube continue to foment—and draw pointed no-comments from both companies—the online powerhouses today announced significant new distribution deals with leading music distributors and a major broadcast network—and the deals may move Google and YouTube closer together.
