Best Buy Launches Blue Label Products

Best Buy Launches Blue Label Products

Store brands aren’t just for socks, imitation mac and cheese and soda anymore. On Wednesday, Best Buy announced the creation of Blue Label, a new line of in-store consumer electronics products that the retailer will have some hand in developing using feedback from its customers.

Unlike true “store brands” that imitate name brands and attempt to cut down on cost, Blue Label products will be developed hand-in-hand with leading manufacturers, and still bear name brands. The first two Blue Label laptops, for instance, come from HP and Toshiba, but have been built to specs Best Buy cooked up with input from consumers.

Amazon Hooks Up With Sellaband

Amazon Hooks Up With SellabandThink of Amsterdam-based Sellaband as record label 2.0. Artists can put tracks up on their site for fans to hear. Those listeners eager enough can pledge moneyto the musicians, and once they’ve reached $50,000 in pledges, the label will help them record and release an album. So far there have been three releases and a total of 11 bands have reachedthe magic money milestone.   But in a new move, Sellaband will now be working with Amazon, at least in the UK. The label will have its own dedicated store, with the CDs selling for around $18 (which is cheap by UK standards), with the revenue shared between the label, the artists and fans.   Amazon will also bring something to the deal, beyond avery high-profile outlet. Once any band has $30,000 in fan investment, Amazon will add credits to that band’s account, then give extra promotion as they pass the $35,000 mark, according to areport in the Guardian.

Johan Vosmeijer, SellaBand managing director, told the newspaper,

New HP Drives Allow CD And Label Burning

A technology dubbed LightScribe enables drives to burn a silk screen-like, high-contrast label on the upper side of CD or DVD media bearing a special coating. After completing a data burn, users will be prompted to flip the disc over to burn a label onto the other side.

The first LightScribe drives and media are expected to hit the market about six months from now, from leading manufacturers such as Hitachi-LG, MicroVision, Mitsubishi Chemical, Moser Baer India, Sonic Solutions, and Toshiba. HP estimates that a drive that uses LightScribe will carry a premium of about $10 over the going price today, and that a disc will cost about a dime more than today’s discs.
