Altec Lansing Mix MT800 Brings the Boom to iPods

Altec Lansing Mix MT800 Brings the Boom to iPods

iPods and portable digital media players might be just the thing for packing your tunes with you wherever you go, but sharing earbuds is no way to bring them to other people, much less pump them into the air with any authority. To that end, Altec Lansing is hoping folks looking for a (somewhat!) portable iPod speaker solution will consider its new Mix iMT800 digital boombox, which features a 5.25-inch subroofer and a rack-style design that belies the company’s normally fairly-staid design style.

Hands-on with new Plantronics products

Hands-on with new Plantronics products

Plantronics and their subsidiary Altec Lansing announced several new products at CES, and we were there to test them in person.

The new Altec Lansing BackBeat 906 is a Bluetooth headset that’s in-ear (similar to the iPod headphones) and slips around the back of your ear, and includes dual microphones for clear reception when you take a call. We listened to some hip-hop and rap on the new device and there’s enough tonal range and bass to rival some expensive headphones from Sony. The microphones can be set in “open” mode so you can hear your surroundings without having to remove the headset. And, the grips on the ear buds adjust for the best fit.

Altec Lansing Intros iPod Gear, PC Speakers

Audio gear maker Altec Lansing is in the process of rebranding itself, rolling out a new logo and Web site to convey the company’s “rich history of groundbreaking audio innovation.” We’re sure that’s what everyone’s’ going to pick out of black, white, grey, and gold…but in the meantime, the company has also unveiled a new desktop speaker system with a integrated subwoofers and three new iPod speaker systems.

Asus M70 Offers 1 TB Storage, Blu-ray

Asus has announced a new high-end notebook computer for folks who can’t get enough high-definition video: the new Asus M70. The notebook features a 17-inch 1,920 by 1,200-pixel WUXGA display, up to 1 TB in storage (spread across two 500 GB drives), a Blu-ray drive for high-definition video playback, and integrated Altec Lansing speakers and support for Dolby Home Theater.

According to Asus, the M70’s features a new AI Light technology that automatically adjusts the brightness of the integrated display to adjust for ambient lighting. The computer also also offers HDMI output for pushing high-definition content to bigger screens, and uses an ATI HD 3650 graphics controller to manage high-definition output.

Altec Lansing iM414 Spreads Zune Love

Altec Lansing made its contribution to the market for third-party Zune accessories on Monday with the announcement of its inMotion 414 Zune dock. Much like docks for the more-popular iPod, Altec’s Zune dock allows users to drop in their players and crank up the tunes without headphones.

Shaped like an extruded L, the iM414 accepts a Zune directly into its base, with a neodymium-driven speaker to either side of it. A small display on its face shows the time or lets users scroll through their favorite radio stations with the built-in FM tuner. It can be powered by either AC power or 3AA batteries, which Altec claims should offer 24 hours of play time. A full-function remote allows control of all of its functions from afar.

Altec Lansing Offers Wireless Home Theater

Altec Lansing Offers Wireless Home Theater

Although Altec Lansing is best known today for its ubiquitous line of PC speakers, the company started out making home theater speakers, and still maintains a portfolio of higher-end offerings. It added onto that line Thursday with the announcement of the Powered Theater Series, a wireless surround sound system for flat panel TVs.

The PT8051 system features only a front speaker and a rear speaker, but delivers five separate audio channels like a traditional setup. The units accomplish this with NXT Digital drivers, which use a 8” by 1.5” flat radiating surface that Altec claims covers more room area than traditional cone speakers. If two separate units is still too much bulk, the PT7031 packs five-channel surround into just one box using the same drivers.

HP Unveils 20.1-Inch Dragon Notebook

Pavilion HDX Dragon Notebook

Not content to let computer maker Dell steal all the thunder with notebook computers which severely strain the definition of “portability” and “laptop,” Hewlett-Packard today announced its  Series Entertainment Notebook PC, dubbed “the Dragon,” along with a selection of Pavilion and Compaq Presario notebook offerings based on Intel’s new Centrino Pro platform. (PDF). The Pavilion HDX might be best described as a desktop replacement rather than a notebook computer system, because it definitely abandons the concepts of “slim” and “lightweight” in favor of “big,” “powerful,” and “multimedia.”

These speakers are supported by immersive sound technology to boost the sound field for a reportedly better listening experience.

Crank Your iPod with Altec Lansing’s M602

Crank Your iPod with Altec Lansing

It’s not like the market is experiencing a dearth of speaker systems designed to convert Apple’s iconic iPods into boomboxes and home stereo systems—heck, even Apple itself has gotten in on the act. Now, Altec Lansing (who itself is responsible for a good portion of the market’s clutter) is aiming at the upper echelons of the home stereo market with its M602 high-end speaker system for iPods (and, coincidentally, for other portable music devices), promising crisp, clean sounds, deep bass, and an elegant look which will “add flare to any home or office décore.”
