LG Adds External Multi-Format DVD Burner

LG Electronics last week unveiled a new external multi-DVD format burner. The new GSA-5169D is priced at $179 and should be available now.

The GSA-5169D, said LG, is capable of reading and writing in all DVD formats, including DVD-RAM. In addition to DVD+-R write speeds of 16x, the GSA-5169D features write speeds of 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+R Double Layer, 4x DVD-R Dual Layer and 5x DVD- RAM. Via the Double Layer and Dual Layer writing technologies, users can store up to 8.5GB of data on a single DVD.

“The newly developed ROM disc has a single-sided, dual-layer structure. The upper layer, closer to the optical head, stores data in the DVD format, and the lower layer stores HD DVD data. The DVD layer has a 4.7GB capacity, satisfying the specification of current DVD discs, while the HD DVD layer can store 15GB. The DVD layer can be played back on currently available DVD players.

NEC Launches $99 Dual Layer DVD Writer

The ND-3500A offers double layer 16X DVD+/-R/RW speed and the support of all major brands of CD, DVD +/-R /RW, and double layer media. This NEC rewritable drive is also compatible with all major PCbrands.

Larry Sheffield, senior vice president of the Solutions Platform Group for NEC Solutions America, believes the ND-3500A features the best DVD technology available in the market today.

I/O Magic Ships Double Layer Drive

In addition, I/OMagic’s new 16X Double Layer drive allows storage of up to twice as much data using DVD double layer (DL) media — allowing up to 8.5GB(1) of storage.

Philips Expands Double Layer DVD Shipments

The DVD+R Double Layer technology almost doubles the storage capacity of the DVD+R/+RW system. Up to 8.5 GB of data – which is about four hours of standard DVD video quality, or 16 hours in standardVHS video quality – can now be stored on a single disc. The disc is single?sided, which means that all content is directly accessible with no need to turn the disc over.

Roxio Software Updated To Burn Double Layer

Roxio today released a downloadable update to its best-selling suite that will immediately enable DVD Double Layer (DL) data burning capabilities and allow consumers to nearly double the amount of valuable personal data they can record to a single DVD +R DL disc.
