Sony Launching New PSP In Japan October 16

Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that its revamped PlayStation Portable gaming unit, the PSP-3000, will go on sale in Japan on October 16 for ¥16,800 ($182), the same price as the current PSP model. However, the PSP-3000 features a number of improvements, including better performance, a greatly enhanced LCD display that improves video display and is more usable outdoors thanks to a glare-free design, plus a built-in microphone. The Japanese launch of the PSP-3000 will be buoyed by the release of Dissidia Final Fantasy from Square Enix, and marks Sony’s latest move in its efforts to capture Japan’s portable gaming market from Nintendo. In recent months, the PSP has managed to outsell the Nintendo DS, spurred in part by the popularity of the game Monster Hunter Freedom 2G.

Microsoft Intros New Sidewinder Peripherals

At the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany, Microsoft has introduced its new Sidewinder X6 gaming keyboard and Sidewinder X5 gaming mouse, hoping to appeal to serious gamers and everyday computer users. The peripherals represent Microsoft’s latest foray into gaming hardware, and new entries in the company’s resurrected Sidewinder line, which it originally launched in 1995 but killed in 2003.

“We know that consumers don’t want to pull out and set up a second keyboard for a gaming session, so we created a device that was perfect for both gaming and regular computer use,” said Microsoft user researcher Kevin Flick, in a statement.

U.S., EU Crack Down on Counterfeit Tech

U.S., EU Crack Down on Counterfeit Tech

U.S. and EU officials are promising to crack down on the manufacturing, distribution, and sales of counterfeit computer components after seizing more than 360,000 fake items worth more than $1.3 billion during a two-week period in a joint operation run at the end of 2007. Seized materials bore the trademarks of major manufacturers including Cisco, Intel, and Philips. Officials would not say whether they knew importers were knowingly bringing counterfeit goods into their markets, or whether the problem was limited to only a few factories. However, both U.S. and EU officials agree counterfeiters have become more sophisticated, offering products covering a wide range of industries from computer and telecommunications to aeronautics and cars.

Sony Planning PS3 Tuner, DVR Functionality?

Sony Planning PS3 Tuner, DVR Functionality?

In an interview with The Press in New Zealand, Sony marketing head Warwick Light apparently spilled the beans on some of Sony’s forthcoming plans for the PlayStation 3, saying the company plans to introduce a tuner and TV recording capabilities to the console. According to Light, the additions would come around the time the New Zealand’s Freeview terrerstrial digital TV service is due to launch in March 2008.

“We’re also hoping next year—about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March)—to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder,” Light said in the interview.

BT Bringing Wi-Fi Calling to PSP

The United Kingdom telecom operator BT has announced it will offer Sony PSP owners custom software which, intitially, will enable voice and video calls to other PSPs, as well as some BT phones in the UK. Eventually, BT plans to distribute the software to telecom operators in 100 other countries, and enable connectivity between PSPs and landlines, mobile phones, and PCs.

BT has signed a four year deal with Sony under which BT will develop and expand communication features for the PSP, using BT’s 21 Century Network (21CN), which is built around VoIP technology. BT intends for 21CN to eventually replace traditional phone networks.

Developers Pledging Allegiance to Ageia

The GC Game Developers Conference, being held this week in Leipzig, Germany, has brought on a flurry of pledges from European game develoeprs embracing the Agiea PhysX physics processor. The Physx processor—announced back in March and a hit at this year’s E3 Expo—enables new levels of real-time simulations of physical objects in games, including everything from realistic character motion to weather and (a delight to many player) completely destructible environments. Gamers who thought the idea of a dedicated processor in their PC devoted solely to game physics was just one step away from making their rig a glorified console system had better get used to the idea of developers—and their top titles—relying on PhysX capabilities. Dell, Alienware and Falcon Northwest now offer PhysX-equipped systems, and add-on boards are available from from ASUS and BFG Technologies.
