Government Anti-Terrorism Link Leads To…Porn

Government Anti-Terrorism Link Leads To...Porn

It’s a bit like a bad joke. When a man was surfing the site of the British Home Office looking for information about anti-terrorism powers on the site of the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism, he clicked on a link for the external site of the Technical Advisory Board.

However, the link didn’t provide quite the information he expected, as he was directed to a Japanese porn site.

He told the BBC, which informed the Home Office, who removed the link. At first the HO believed it has been hacked, but it was nothing so exciting. Instead, the porn company had simply bought the domain after it expired.

Go High-Def with Iomega ScreenPlay TV Link

If you’ve ever wondered why you can’t just load your video or images on a USB hard drive, plug it into your TV via USB, and put your content on the big screen…well, Iomega has the next best thing with its Screenplay TV Link. Screenplay TV Link takes the same audio and video technology in its Screenplay HD Multimedia Drive, but instead of packing its own internal 500 GB drive, the Screenplay TV Link lets users hook up their own USB storage devices, including hard drives and flash drives.

Fake Twitter Profile Links To Worm

Fake Twitter Profile Links To Worm

First it was Facebook and MySpace, where messages from “friends” contained a link to install the latest Flash Player – which proved to be a worm that made the user’s computer part of a botnet. Now it’s micro-blogging site Twitter – which is the first time the site has been attacked.

The BBC reports that security company Kaspersky Lab says a fake profile on Twitter purports to have a link to a porn video. Instead it loads a fake version of Flash that in fact contains programs capable of stealing personal data. Kaspersky also discovered the worms on Facebook and MySpace.

Facebook, MySpace Spread Worm

Facebook, MySpace Spread Worm

Have you been on Facebook or MySpace lately and received a message from a friend with a link to download the latest Flash Player? If you clicked on that link, be very worried. There’s a very good chance you’re now part of a botnet.

According to CNET, Kaspersky Lab has warned of a worm circulating that way on the social networking sites. Once infected, the next time a user logs on to the site, the message is automatically sent to people on the friends list.

"We’ve seen these types of worms before, typically around MySpace," said Kaspersky’s Ryan Naraine. "People are more trusting of things they receive from a friend."

Assessing the Apple Launch

One of the difficulties of looking at Apple products critically is how hot emotions run.  Apple has a very loyal group of followers who defend all the company does, and Apple does such a great job of promoting its offerings it is sometimes hard to see through the reality distortion field and do a proper assessment.

What I’ve learned to do is write out what I think Apple needs to do at a particular event, and then assess how they did.  It isn’t a perfect process, because I may be setting the bar too high or low myself, but at least it is independent of Apple and avoids any bias—positive or negative—that might be introduced as a result of the event itself.

IEEE 1394 Makes Progress in Family Rooms

IEEE 1394, also known as FireWire and Sony’s i.LINK interface, isn’t just for PC’s anymore. According to In-Stat, IEEE 1394 is working its way into more CE products, like your television, DVD player, and set-top boxes. The older 1394a spec which provides 400 Megabits/second of bandwidth, is the interface often being used for new CE products, while the newer, higher bandwidth 1394b which supports 800 Megabit/second of data, is starting to make its way onto PC motherboards.

“Recent member surveys indicate that all the leading CE manufacturers are taking advantage of 1394 as they develop new generations of HDTVs, set top boxes, digital video recorders, and other innovative new products,” says James Snider, executive director of the 1394 Trade Association.
