Stoba Material Can Prevent Lithium-ion Battery Fires, Explosions

melting-iphoneJust about all of the gadgets that we take for granted each day from cameras to our notebooks and mobile phones use lithium-ion batteries. These batteries have been around for many years and for the most part are trouble free.

However, last year and in 2007 a number of fires and explosions caused by overheating lithium-ion batteries resulted in some of the largest recalls in history. Companies including Sony and many other large computer manufacturers were forced to recall tens of thousands of lithium-ion batteries used in notebooks.

How Blu-Ray Won the Fight and Why It Probably Won?t Matter

Many retailers have been piling on what has been a long string of bad news for the HD DVD camp and announced they were going to stop selling HD DVD players. Most recently, Best Buy and Netflix indicated they would be dropping HD DVD. Then, one Blu-Ray customer figured out he had been screwed by the Blu-Ray side and started a class action suit against one of the major Blu-Ray companies, something that is likely to accelerate.

Matsushita Touts Spark-Resistant Batteries

One of the tenets of capitalism is that businesses and manufacturers will quickly jump on any marketing and sales opportunity they believe is viable—and if they’re successful, they can quickly lock down a major portion of a market. Following that idea, Matsushita—which is the parent company of the consumer electronics brand Panasonic—announced today (Japanese) that it has boosted its production capacity of spark-resistant batteries from 100,000 units a month in April 2006 to five million units per month now, filling thhe market and confidence gap left in the wake of rival Sony’s recent 10 million unit battery recall, as well as smaller-scale recalls from Sanyo.

Toshiba Battery Charges in a Minute

“The new battery can be refilled to 80 percent of capacity in one minute, Toshiba claimed, significantly less time than the one-to-four hours needed for lithium-ion batteries now in use.

According to Toshiba, the secret’s in the negative electrode. “Nano-particles prevent organic liquid electrolytes from reducing during battery recharging,” said Toshiba in a statement. “The nano-particles quickly absorb and store vast amount of lithium ions, without causing any deterioration in the electrode.” “

Gateway Laptop Promises 10-Hour Battery

The Gateway M460 notebook was designed to provide maximum battery life and  the widest range of advanced battery options.  It provides from four to seven  hours of battery life on a single charge with one of the primary 6-cell,  8-cell and 12-cell Lithium Ion batteries.  Also, the notebook has a modular  hot-swap bay, so an optional modular 6-cell battery can be used with the  12-cell primary battery to achieve up to ten plus hours of battery life for  all-day computing.  When combined with the notebook’s thin-and-light design — starting weight is less than six pounds and it measures as little as  1.31 inches thin — the battery life and other features make the Gateway  M460 the obvious choice for professionals looking for a powerful, portable PC.

The Gateway M460 can be customized with a wide range of features,  including displays, processors, memory, hard drives and optical drives, so  each organization can choose the configurations that best fit their needs.  As  a result, it can be configured to meet almost any budget or performance  specification.  This flexibility saves IT departments’ time and money by  letting them standardize on a single notebook platform, regardless of the  varied end-user requirements.  Further protecting Gateway customers’  investment, the Gateway M460 promises image stability and a long managed life  cycle like its predecessors, the Gateway M405 and Gateway 450.

KDDI To Develop Fuel-Cell Mobile Phone

Cell phones are becoming increasingly multifunctional, equipped with TV viewing and game playing capabilities, and the trend is forcing handsets to consume more power.

Currently available lithium-ion batteries for cell phones, however, last only about two hours if users continuously watch TV on their terminals. A handset powered by a fuel cell is expected to last more than twice as long, the sources said.

The planned fuel cell would extract hydrogen ions from methanol to generate power, meaning that no time would be required for recharging because simply replenishing its methanol supply would allow the battery to operate continuously.
