Is Blu-ray Worth Buying?

With stock values plummeting and your 401K on the brink of becoming a 40K, it’s getting increasingly hard to look at next-generation Blu-ray disc players as a sound investment.

The big question: While the high-definition storage format quickly ousted HD DVD for popular dominance amongst entertainment enthusiasts, at current prices, does it deserve a place in your home?

Well, it should if you want to view Blu-ray movies, at the very least. Believe it or not, there are still many people that don’t know that Blu-ray offers a truly high-definition film viewing experience, and that a Blu-ray player is needed to enjoy that movie magic. Once you can get over that initial tech hump though, there are a few other things to think about before eyeing the piggybank.

Seagate Bets On DAVE Mobile Wireless Drives

There are a couple truisms in the world of mobile consumer electronics right now: hip consumers love their portable devices, and hip consumers love their digital media. The problem is that the storage requirements of digital video strain the capabilities of all but the mightiest cell phones and PDAs. So leading drive manufacturer Seagate is betting that consumers are ready to cart their digital media around with them on a hard drive—so long as that hard drive is small, svelte, and sports integrated wireless capabilities so there’s no on-the-run cable-tangle to unravel.

Matsushita Touts Spark-Resistant Batteries

One of the tenets of capitalism is that businesses and manufacturers will quickly jump on any marketing and sales opportunity they believe is viable—and if they’re successful, they can quickly lock down a major portion of a market. Following that idea, Matsushita—which is the parent company of the consumer electronics brand Panasonic—announced today (Japanese) that it has boosted its production capacity of spark-resistant batteries from 100,000 units a month in April 2006 to five million units per month now, filling thhe market and confidence gap left in the wake of rival Sony’s recent 10 million unit battery recall, as well as smaller-scale recalls from Sanyo.
