Google Hits Back Against Bing

Google Hits Back Against Bing

With an 81% market share of search, you’d think Google wouldn’t be too worried about, Bing, Microsoft’s revamped and repackaged search engine. After all, it’s only has 5.3% of the market, trailing Yahoo.

But Google is obviously taking the challenge seriously by enhancing the capabilities of its own search engine to keep people coming back.

Google software engineer Lingyun Liu said in a blog post that when locations are searched, the company is putting images next to maps and links, and clicking on them takes users to the photos layer on Google Maps, which offers more images.

China Jails Counterfeiters

China Jails Counterfeiters

Microsoft has described them as "ringleaders of the world’s largest software-counterfeiting syndicate," but on New Year’s Eve the 11 men convicted of counterfeiting Microsoft software became numbers, as they were given jail sentences of between one-and-a-half and six-and-a-half years after being found guilty of counterfeiting, supposedly the longest sentences for the crime in Chinese history.

They reportedly distributed over $2 billion in fake Microsoft software before being identified in a joint operation between the FBI and the Chinese Public Security Bureau, leading to a series of arrests in July 2007, according to ZDNet. In a statement, Microsoft said that "evidence provided by Microsoft customers through the Microsoft [Windows Genuine Advantage] piracy reporting tool proved to be essential in tracking down this criminal syndicate."

IE7: It’s Big, It’s Bold and it’s Surprisingly Good

Let’s face it, IE6 really wasn’t much of an improvement over IE5. Most people felt the only reason to move to IE6 was because it was free and it bundled a series of updates (mostly security updates) into a single package. Strangely enough, even though other browsers like Firefox, Opera, and Netscape have advanced in features substantially, IE6 has held its own and has at times taken market share back from the new browsers. This is largely because of compatibility. Companies, particularly for internal sites, often default to IE and the other browsers just didn’t work as well, forcing folks to grudgingly use IE some of the time. People just do not like to switch back and forth between similar products.

China Defends Internet Policing

At an unusual press briefing in Beijing, Liu Zhengrong, a deputy chief in China’s Internet Affairs Bureau, has told western journalists international criticism of China’s censorship and policing of the Internet is an unfair double standard, and that China’s Internet policies “basically have identical legislative objectives and principles” as Western Internet regulations. The briefing was covered by the New York Times (registration required) and the BBC.

Yahoo Implicated in 2nd Chinese Arrest

In an article posted on the U.S.-based Chinese language news portal Boxun, long-time Chinese political activist Liu Xiaobo has claimed that Internet giant Yahoo cooperated with Chinese police in August 2003, leading to the identification and arrest of activist Li Zhi in 2003. Li, who tried to join the dissident Chinese Democracy Party, was charged with subverting state power and sentenced to 8 years in prison. According to Liu, who in turn cited a statement from Li’s lawyers, Chinese authorities sentenced Li on the basis of information turned over by Yahoo’s Hong Kong office.

AOpen Introduces XC Cube EZ661 System

The XC Cube EZ661 series of barebones PCs supports Intel Pentium 4 Prescott CPUs of up to 3.4GHz with Intel’s Hyper Threading Technology, and has an external bus speed of 533/800 MHz. The EZ661 alsofeatures a powerful 275-watt power supply as well as two S-ATA connectors.

“AOpen has developed a special 4-way voltage technique to efficiently stabilize the CPU,” said Chris Liu, Senior Director, XC Cube Business Management, AOpen Inc. Additionally, the XC Cube EZ661 uses a patented heat sink engineered with four copper heat-reducing tubes to efficiently cool the CPU, and ultra-thin copper heat-dispersing fins with a side-blowing fan to vent hot air out through the ventilation holes of the system. This advanced breakthrough reduces the chance of overheating and affords customers a greater degree of reliability. “With AOpen’s innovative cooling technology, the CPU can reliably perform with continuous stability for long hours and at high speeds. And, with the CPU running at full speed, AOpen’s unique SilentTek silencing technique provides a low-noise, pleasant and quiet working environment,” Liu went on to say.

AOpen Ships XC Cube EX915 SFF PC

The XC Cube EX915 barebones PC — the elegant new flagship of AOpen’s growing SFF product line — is one of the world’s smallest and most powerful products of its type available on the market todayand is virtually unparalleled in its feature offerings and performance.

VIA Brings Eden Processors Up To 1GHz

VIA today announced two additions to its low-power Eden ESP processor family with the ESP8000 (800MHz) and ESP10000 (1GHz).

The Eden is a popular platform for low-power PC projects including home theater PCs, routers and specialized servers. According to VIA, the 1GHz ESP10000 consumes as little as 7W, and is silent due to its fanless cooling configuration.

The new Edens are based on VIA’s 130nm Nehemiah core which is the basis of its C3 desktop line and Antaur mobile processors. The ESP8000 and ESP10000 chips are priced at $85 and $100, respectively.
