From Google And NASA, Singularity U

Launched yesterday at the Technology, Entertainment and Design conference in Long Beach, Singularity University is going to be an institution with a difference. Its chancellor will be futurist Ray Kurzweil, whose 2005 book gave the place its name.

It will be housed at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, and Google has donated $1 million to help fund it, while other big companies have also given money. But the tuition for the nine-week course will be a very hefty $25,000.

The World’s Thinnest TV

The World’s Thinnest TVThere’s thin, and then there’s incredibly thin. When it comes to television screens, Sony has come up with one that’s going to be almostimpossible to beat, the proverbial size 0 of displays – at 0.01 inch (0.3 millimeters) it’s thin enough to bend. The company has released video of the screen, which currently offers a 2.5 inchdisplay in full color.   This is a huge breakthrough, an advance on the flat panel sets we’ve all been buying, even if Sony hasn’t yet decided what they’ll do with it. Acompany spokesman did offer speculation, however.   “In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost or a person’s wrist, even worn as clothing. Perhaps it can be put up likewallpaper.”   Sony had predicted this development more than a year ago, and they’ve finally delivered. The screen employs a mix of technologies, an organic electroluminescent displayand an organic thin film transistor (TFT).   This puts Sony firmly back in the forefront of display technology, and they presented it at a symposium for the SocietyFor Information Display in Long Beach last week.   So will we be wearing our televisions in the future? Probably not, but if you have the desire, it just came a lot closer.

NEC Develops Wireless HDTV Tranceiver

From the press release:

The features of the wireless video transmission equipment are as follows:

(1) The transceiver is adapted to input/output high-quality component video signals. Both uncompressed HDTV signals and stereo audio signals are transformed into a 1-Gbps (”gigabit per second”) digital-data stream, and then converted to 60-GHz-band to allow wireless transmission by using ASK modulation
(2) Due to a downsized wireless module and a simplified power supply circuit, a transceiver as small in size as a business card is realized. Its dimensions are 70 mm X 50 mm X 15 mm (52 cc.) High-frequency components, such as monolithic IC’s, filters and oscillators, are all built into a ceramic module using flip-chip bonding  which enables easy assembling with less tuning, as well as a reduction in size.

Pioneer’s DVR-310-S to hit store shelves

The first new DVD recorder, which will hit store shelves this month, is Pioneer’s DVR-310-S.  This entry-level DVD recorder allows families to replace outdated VCRs with simple one-button recording for televised content as well as home movies directly onto DVD discs.  Before the Christmas season is over, Pioneer Electronics, a world leader in home entertainment technology, will introduce three additional products including two that combine the benefits of home DVD recording with the convenience of the popular TiVo® service and hard drive storage capabilities.

Pioneer debuts two new receivers

With multi-channel music and movies driving sales of DVD players, consumers are adding five, six, and seven speaker configurations to their home theater systems. As a result, Pioneer continues to develop new audio/video receivers with features to enhance the home theater environment. Four of these receivers now offer multi-channel acoustic calibration (MCACC), allowing consumers the ability to easily and accurately set-up their speakers with optimal performance based on the room environment.
