Facebook Settled Origin Suit For $65m

Facebook Settled Origin Suit For $65m

$65 million sounds like a lot of money. Okay, it is a lot of money. But compared to the $15 billion valuation put on social networking site Facebook, it’s peanuts. Yet it’s the amount Mark Zuckerberg agreed to pay former Harvard classmates, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, to settle the suit they brought against him, claiming he stole the idea for Facebook from their site, HarvardConnect, which became Connect U.

The amount had never been officially disclosed, but was revealed in a newsletter from California legal firm Quinn Emmanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges, which acted for the Winklevoss brothers. It was spotted by The Recorder.

Man Sells "Entire Life" On eBay

You can find a lot of strange things up for bids on eBay, but how about an entire life? That’s what Ian Usher was selling, however. The Briton, who moved to Perth, Australia, six years ago, had his “entire life” up for bids on the auction site, in hope of raising enough money to make a fresh start after spltting with his wife of five years, realizing everything he owned reminded him of her.

And what makes up Usher’s entire life? Well, up for grabs was his three-bedroom house, car, motorcycle, jet ski and more, including an introduction to his friends, and a two-week trial at his job selling rugs.

Facebook Boosts Privacy Controls

Facebook Boosts Privacy ControlsReuters reports that Facebook has upped its privacy stakes for users. As of this morning, the social network has givenusers more control over what different friends, not to mention friends of friends, can see of their profile.   The company has always offered plenty of privacy controls, but they claim that only25% of subscribers really take advantage of those controls.   Under the new system, users can create up to 100 different friends lists, a concept that was introduced in December.   MattCohler, Facebook’s vice president of product management, said,   "We have a lot more users, a lot more types of users, a lot more relationships, we have a lot more types ofrelationships." The company also confirmed that the long-rumored Facebook Chat instant messaging service will be started in just a few weeks, and as it will work in a web browser, won’trequire the downloading of any special software.

Spokane Becomes Citywide Hot Spot

“A lot of communities have hot spots,” said Jim West, mayor of the city of 200,000. “We have a hot zone.”

The zone uses new technology that allows Internet signals to be transmitted more than a mile, far beyond the traditional 200- to 300-foot range of Wi-Fi antennas.

City officials put the cost of the project, which requires just a few antennas atop buildings, at between $50,000 and $75,000.

Quote from the review at CDR-Info:

“After a lot of waiting (due to some problems in the post), our Sony drive finally arrived thanks to the official European distributor. The recorder is capable burning at speeds of 8x for DVD+R media, 4x for DVD+RW, 4x for DVD-R and 2x for DVD-RW. The maximum allowed recording speeds for CD media are 40x for CD-R and 24x for CD-RW. “
