Sony’s USB Micro-Vault Tiny Drives Ship
Blink and you might lose it: Sony Electronics has begun shipping its Micro-Vault Tiny “byte-sized” USB 2.0 flash drives in capacities from 256 MB up to 4 GB. And when they say “tiny,” they seem to mean it: the little darlings measure just one inch long, roughly one-half inch wide, and as thick as a quarter. But they’re available in “striking” colors so, maybe, you’ll spend less time under your desk on all fours wondering where the Micro-Vault might have landed.
Lucasfilm Goes Back to Star Wars 1.0
In spite of strong statements from creator George Lucas that 2004’s digitally remastered, restored, and enhanced versions of his original Star Wars triology were the definitive versions of his films, Fox and Lucasfilm have announced they will release new two-disc DVD sets that will include the original versions of Star Wars,The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi as they were originally shown in theaters when released in 1977, 1980, and 1983, respectively, along with the remastered “definitive” version. The movies will be priced at $30 each and will go on sale September 12, 2006, and be available only until December 31, 2006.
DVDs rentals outstrip VHS tapes
Earlier this month, for the first time ever, consumers rented more DVDs than VHS cassettes, according to the Video Software Dealers Association, a nonprofit entertainment trade association.
According to the association, consumers rented 28.2 million DVDs compared to 27.3 million VHS cassettes during the week ended June 15.
It is the latest milestone for the digital video disk (DVD) video format, which was first introduced six years ago. According to the association’s figures, DVD year-to-date rental revenue surpassed VHS rental revenue for the first time in May.
Sean Bersell, a spokesman for the association, said several factors caused the format’s popularity in the rental stores.
