Lycos Debuts VoIP Application

Lycos today rolled out their VoIP offering which they say is the Internet’s first ever of its type to “combine robust entertainment features”. The new Lycos Phone software application is powered by Globe7.

Lycos Phone, said the online portal, is downloadable for free and currently available for Windows based machines. Users using this application will be able to make free PC to PC and video PC to PC calls as well as receiving free incoming calls from landline or mobile phones.

Other features of Lycos Phone include free streaming video on demand, a built-in MP3 player, free U.S. phone number, free fax and free voicemail to email.

Lycos Turns 10, Relaunches Home Page

Lycos, old Internet buddy, has it really been ten years of fun under the sun already? I guess so, as the venerable Internet portal announced today the relaunch of their home page to start the kick off of their decade anniversary celebration.

Lycos, in a company press release, said the new home page provides more extensive daily content including streaming video and audio, games, photo albums, blogs, horoscopes, news and more. This is in addition to quick access to Lycos Mail, and content navigation with Lycos Search, including web, people, yellow pages, shopping, multimedia and discussion search tabs.

Lycos First With Gigabyte Mailboxes

Lycos announced Tuesday that it is upgrading its service to give consumers 1GB of e-mail storage. But unlike some rival services being developed, the Lycos service is not free. Users will have to pay a monthly fee of 3.4 pounds ($6.01).

Google caused considerable excitement last month when it announced that it was developing a free service called Gmail and that it would give all users of this service 1GB of storage space–far more than the 2MB offered by MSN’s Hotmail, for example. But the plans also alarmed some people, because Google said it intends to scan e-mail messages for keywords and insert targeted advertisements into the messages.

Janet’s “Malfunction” Tops Net Searches

On Monday, Janet Jackson and the halftime show received 60 times as many searches as the Paris Hilton sex tape and 80 times as many searches as Britney Spears.

Lycos says that prior to this week, the most-searched event in the history of the Lycos 50 over a one-day period was the September 11 attack on America. Although it is very difficult to compare searches for the two events, it looks like the Super Bowl halftime show was the equal of September 11 when it comes to Internet attention.
