Dell Introduces Faster 24-inch XPS One

Dell Introduces Faster 24-inch XPS One

It looks like Dell has big plans for its iMac-imitating XPS One system – quite literally. On Thursday the company revealed the XPS One 24, a new version of the system that bumps the old version’s 20-inch display to a massive 24-inch, 1080p version, and brings internal components along for the ride.

Dell will update the processor from an existing Core 2 Duo CPU up to Intel’s new Core 2 Quad Q8200, and offer discrete graphics in the form of Nvidia’s GeForce 9600M GT as well. Audio has also been refined with dual stereo speakers and subwoofer from JBL.

Asus Launches First Quad-Core Notebook

Following up on last month’s introduction of the G50 and G71 gaming notebooks, Taiwanese manufacturer Asus today topped off its newly minted G-series with the official launch of the fastest G71 yet. The 17-inch machine holds the distinction of being Asus’ very first gaming notebook to sport a quad-core processor.

Intel’s Quad Core QX9300 joins the more pedestrian Core 2 Duo Extreme and Core 2 Duo as Asus’ processor offerings, the latter two of which have been available since the notebook first appeared in late August. All models picks up an Nvidia GeForce 9700M GT with 512MB of GDDR3 VRAM. The G71 can be equipped with up to 4GB of memory and 1TB of storage, via dual 500GB disks.

The new notebooks follow up on Toshiba’s first X205 SLI notebook offerings introduced last September.

And, the top-of-the-line MacBook Pro systems get Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 512 MB of video memory…and a new multi-touch trackpad.

Alienware Adds Penryn to Area-51 m15x

Boutique computer maker Alienware—now a subsidiary of Dell—has always had a penchant for choosing raw horsepower over things like battery life and affordability. The company is sticking to its guns with a new edition of its Alienware Area-51 m15x notebook, adding a 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 “Penryn” CPU as an option to the 15.4-inch notebook. The move makes the x15x the only 15.4-inch system on the market today to sport the 45nm processor.

Toshiba Adds Penryn-powered Notebooks

Toshiba has added Intel’s Penryn-class Core 2 Duo T8100 processors to it’s Satellite X205 and U305 offerings, giving both gamers and the light-and-portable crowds reasons to celebrate. The Satellite U305-S2816 caters to customers looking for a thin notebook with peak performance, while the substantial X205-SLi2 and X205-SLi4 cater to serious gamers.

Starting at $1,349.99, the U305-S2816 offers a 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo T8100 processor with 23 MB of L2 cache, 2 GB of RAM (expandable to 4 GB), a 250 MB hard disk drive, a DVD±RW dual-layer DVD burner, Intel GMA X3100 graphics, and a 13.3-inch LCD display. Weighing in at 4.6 pounds, the U305-S2816 also features 802.11a/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, an embedded Webcam and microphone, and an integrated fingerprint reader.

Dell XPS M1530 Notebook Starts at $999

Dell has taken the wraps off its new XPS M1530 notebook computer, a slim new system with a 1-inch profile and a design largely inspired by the XPS M1330 Dell introduced earlier this year. But it’s not so much the similarities to the M1330 that might attract customers to the M1530: instead, that’ll be the 15.4-inch display range of Core 2 Duo processors, Nvidia graphics controllers, storage updates, a 4 GB RAM ceiling, an optional Blu-ray drive…and a starting price of just $999.

Sony Intros Eco-Cool Vaio Notebooks

In a move Sony characterizes as “affirming its eco-conscious stance,” the company is dressing up its Vaio FZ notebooks in four new “eco-cool” nature-inspired stylings intended to enable users to demonstrate their dedication to preserving the Earth’s environment.

Sony alo says it will donate one percent of the purchase price of its Graphics Splash Eco Edition notebooks to the 1% for the Planet business alliances dedicated to raising money for non-profit environmental organizations. In addition, Sony is offering rebates to customers who trade in their old PCs for a credit toward a new Vaio notebook.

MSI’s GX600 Packs Turbo Power

MSI

The “turbo” button may have disappeared off most computer cases a decade ago, but MSI saw marketing value in that little bit of racy automotive lingo, and they’re bringing it back. The company’s newest gaming laptop, the GX600, comes with a turbo button that gives gamers a boost in power when activated.

MSI calls it Turbo Drive Engine (TDE) technology, and while it sounds like a silly gimmick, the silver button actually overclocks the CPU 20 percent when it’s turned on in AC mode. The company claims it cuts boot times to less than 40 seconds, while most notebooks take over a minute. You’ll have to decide for yourself whether you notice in your next game of Quake 4.

Dell Courts Gamers with XPS M1730

Hot on the heels of Voodoo’s Envy M:152 gaming laptop, Dell announced its own competitor for that niche market, the similarly named XPS M1730, on Thursday. “The beast,” as Dell is fond of calling it, is the first notebook to get a mobile PhysX processor from Ageia, as well as Logitech’s GamePanel LCD.

Upgraded M1730s get Intel’s Extreme Edition Core 2 Duo x7900 processor, which runs at 2.8GHz with support for overclocking up to 3.2GHz. Vanilla versions of the system get the Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 at 2.2GHz. They also have 2GB of DDR2 memory, an Nvidia GeForce Go 8700M GT GPU, and a 200GB 7200 rpm hard drive. A massive 17-inch LCD panel with 1920×1200 resolution serves as a desktop-replacement style display.
