Microsoft to Develop iPhone Apps?

Microsoft to Develop iPhone Apps?

In a move that can only be compared to Ford developing aftermarket parts for the Chevrolet Corvette, Microsoft has apparently decided that it isn’t too snide to develop software for the flagship platform of its most bitter rival: Apple’s iPhone. In an interview with Fortune, Microsoft exec Tom Gibbons revealed that company engineers are already tinkering with the forbidden fruit.

“It’s really important for us to understand what we can bring to the iPhone,” Gibbons told the magazine. “The key question is, what is the value that we need to bring?” While Gibbons did not reveal what applications Microsoft was considering porting to the iPhone, he did make it clear that the company’s Mac Business Unit (which already develops software such as Office for OS X) could make the leap.

Big Fixes for Mac Office 2008

Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit has released a significant set of fixes to its Office 2008 productivity suite for Mac OS X. The Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 update includes a number of critical fixes, patches security vulnerabilities, and addresses a number of other bugs that have bitten some Macintosh users. The update is available as a standalone 114 MB download, and will likely turn up in Microsoft Office’s AutoUpdate feature…assuming users have installed the 2.1.1 update to the AutoUpdate feature.

Microsoft to Deliver Office 2008 for Macs

Ever since Apple announced its intent to transition its entire Macintosh product line to Intel processors a year ago, speculation has abounded: will Microsoft continue to develop its version of Microsoft Office for the Mac OS X operating system, or, with the advent of Intel processors and Windows-running capabilities offered by Apple’s own Boot Camp and third-party virtualization solutions from the likes of VMWare and Parallels, simply decide that if Mac users want to run Office, they can darn well run Windows too.

Microsoft Ships Messenger 6.0 for Mac OS X

When it comes to the Macintosh, let’s face it: Microsoft is better known for what it doesn’t do rather than what it actually does. Mac versions of its Office productivity applications have been money makers for coming up on two decades, but, gosh, where’s Outlook for Macintosh? Business tools like Access? Heck, even cute consumer services like MSN are missing in action! Internet Explorer? Mothballed. Windows Media Player? Gone. Games? None. Virtual PC? Acquired, digested, and >burp< done.

Apple’s Intel Macs: iMac and MacBook Pro

Apple

At his keynote at this week’s Macworld Expo in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the first Macintosh computers based on Intel processors “a little ahead of schedule,” and

Mac blog leads to Microsoft layoff

Earlier this week, he posted at his personal blog site a picture of G5 Macs being unloaded near the MSCopy building. Shortly thereafter, Microsoft terminated Hanscom’s employment contract.

Microsoft’s reaction may seem a tad harsh. The company does have a Mac Business Unit, which produces software for Apple computers. It’s no shocker that Redmond would want some of Apple’s latest and greatest kit. Clearly, however, the company did not like a temp worker eyeing its loading docks and then running home to blog about it to strangers.
