Mozilla Issues Firefox Updates

Mozilla has issued updates, all rated as “critical” for both the Firefox 2 and 3 browsers.

Firefox 3 receives three patches, the first for Mac OSX, to stop a potential attack by a malformed .gif file. The second fixes a flaw in the uniform resource identifier (URI) that could let external apps access the computer. The final Firefox fix addresses the way the browser handles CSS code. Without the fix, it’s possible for a crafted CSS object to crash the application then allow remote code execution.

Two pair of updates for Firefox 2 address the URI and CSS issues.

Wi-Fi Is Broken, Say Experts

Wi-Fi Is Broken, Say ExpertsHow safe is your Wi-Fi? Not as much as you might hope, according to some experts. And much of it is due to compatibility issues.   There are two standards for security in Wi-Fi. The basic one isknown as Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). The other, new, standard is Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), which was updated in 2004 as WPA-2. However, to use either of the improved standards you needWindows Vista, Mac OSX, Linux, or XP with SP2 installed. That means many are unable to use it, leaving them quite vulnerable.   “WEP as a security measure is so broken that your (andeveryone else’s) kid sister can easily circumvent it," computer security researcher Ralf-Philipp Weinmann, co-author of the aircrack-ptw tool that can crack WEP in minutes, told the BBC.   He’s not the first to hack WEP, either. Nor the last – it’s just been done again by Vivek Ramachandran of AirTight Networks, the BBC reported.   All this mean people can not only piggyback on your Wi-Fi connection, but that they can also track you online. Theycould also use your connection for criminal activities that could end up being traced back to you.   In word, they all say, Wi-Fi is broken. You might want to think about next time you settleinto your favorite Wi-Fi hotspot and open the laptop. Or next time you log on at home.

Leopard: Apple Embraces Windows and Gaming

One of the things Apple does vastly better than Microsoft is move their users between operating system versions. With the one exception of a massive installed base bath they took when they moved to OSX, losing about half of their market at the turn of the century (these were folks that probably weren’t buying product anyway), Apple has been well ahead of Microsoft in terms of installed base migrations.

Canon Europe/Japan Debut New Powershot A85

“The A70 was successful because it found the perfect balance between point-and-shoot economy and pro-sumer control features,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe at the camera’s launch. “The A85 builds on this success by adding new features that make it even easier to use, while at the same time giving the experienced user more options.”

A wide selection of accessories includes wide and tele converters, close-up lens, and a waterproof case.

BuyMusic.com to compete with Apple iTunes

It sounds like a good deal compared to compared to other pay per download sites. However, after extensively surfing the site we found some significant issues. The largest of which is the fact thatthis service is only available to PC users. This limits a substantial portion of the market, but is not unlike Apple’s iTunes which is only available to Mac OSX users.

When trying to search for a particular artist, we found their search engine non functional, and with the non-intuitive layout of site, it is almost impossible to find what you’re looking for bybrowsing the sub categories. BuyMusic.com claims to be “The World’s Largest Download Music Store,” however, it was difficult for us to confirm this and compare artist availability against similarsites, with the inadequate search engine.
