Electronic Arts‘ latest update to its football franchise, Madden NFL 09, lands at retailers today…and already the curse of sports-video-game packaging has struck the game. Madden 09 boxes were originally to feature quarterback Bret Favre in that familiar Green Bay Packers uniform. But Favre went to the New York Jets last week, meaning Madden 09 is redoing its boxes with Favre in a Jet’s uniform.
Of course, in the game, players can have Favre play for any team they like.
It might be one of the most self-congratulatory press releases to come around these parts lately (PDF), but video game mega-publisher Electronic Arts apparently has some reason to shout and dump an ice-filled cooler of Gatorade all over itself: apparently Madden NFL 07 sold more than two million copies during its first week of release, the best first-week performance in the game franchise’s 17-year history. And, in a sign of the enormous influence video games are coming to have on contemporary culture, those two million copies account for more than $100 million in revenue: that’s more than most summer Hollywood movies pull in during their first week.
Electronic Arts today said that their latest Madden NFL franchise game, Madden NFL 06, is now appearing on store shelves for the Playstation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance. A PC version will be available on August 17, with a PSP version to follow on September 20.
EA has a made a few changes to this latest Madden NFL version, the company said. They’ve added a new QB Vision Control feature which gives you a different viewing perspective from which to scan the field, look for defenders and make more accurate throws. This is coupled with QB Precision Placement, which EA says will allow gamers to “put the ball exactly where you want itâ€.
