Global Job Cuts At MySpace?

Global Job Cuts At MySpace?

According to reports in the Guardian, MySpace is considering shutting down its offices in San Francisco, Italy, France and Spain. If this happens, and it could possibly occur as early as this week, hundreds of jobs will be lost.

The office in San Francisco is home to 200 employees and only opened at the end of 2007. It’s believed some workers would be given the chance to relocate to MySpace HQ in Los Angeles.

Symnantec: Malware Tops 1 Million

In its bi-annual Internet Security Threat Report (PDF), antivirus vendor Symantec says that it had identified over 1.1 million malicious code threats by the end of the 2007—and that almost two thirds of them were created during 2007. Symantec attributes the rapid rise in the number of malware programs to attackers’ explosive introductions of new Trojan programs, which pretend to be something useful or interesting while secretively installing spyware, key loggers, or taking over a user’s computer.

Uwe Boll Announces Five Bouts with Critics

Since 1994, German filmmaker Uwe Boll has managed to craft himself a reputation as the Ed Wood of his generation, producing and directing films—often based on video games—which are often considered so bad as to be unwatchable. (And no, we don’t mean “so bad they’re good,” we just mean “bad.”) Boll’s films make it to a few theaters, but just barely, and yet Boll keeps getting rights to scripts and properties and churns out opus after opus thanks to a provision in German tax law that rewards investments in Germany’s film industry. Investors get to write of the entirety of film investments as a tax deduction, and even invest borrowed money and write off financing fees. If the movie makes money, investors pay taxes on the profits; if the movie loses money…writeoff.

CNN Wants to Tap Citizen Journalism

Digital technology and the Internet are changing the face of news gathering: many people will remember that early images and footage of the 9-11 attacks, the Madrid train bombing, and the London subway bombings came in from everyday people with digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones. Today, cell phone cameras and other devices are capturing fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, violence n Baghdad, and local events long before news crews can arrive—often, personal media on major stories hits the Internet before mainstream media can begin coverage.
