Google’s Gmail Web-based email service has always occupied something of an odd niche: although for years it has been a favorite of tech-heads and the digitally savvy, it didn’t boast the kind of user base that Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, and the ever-more-venerable AOL managed to bring in. But now that Google has finally brought Gmail out of its five-year beta, Gmail seems to be moving up in the world: according to media metrics firm comScore, Google just barely edged out AOL in July to become the third most-popular Web-based email service among U.S. Internet users.

Yahoo Makes Mail, Toolbar More Social
Following up on an initiative it announced almost a year ago, embattled Internet giant Yahoo has rolled out a new version of its widely-used Yahoo Mail service that offers a “smarter,” socially aware inbox that can automatically highlight communications from friends on social networking sites as well as prioritized their inbox and folders based on social connections. Yahoo has also introduced a new preview version of its Yahoo Toolbar that provides access to friend updates and updates from both Yahoo and third-party services as users surf the Web.
Verizon Launches Motorola Krave Flip-Phone
Hot on the heels of the introduction of a flip-style BlackBerry phone Verizon Wireless is going live with the Motorola Krave, a new interactive touchscreen flip-phone that features haptic feedback and a transparent lid so users can access key information and functions without actually having to open the phone. The phone features two layers of touch: a full touchscreen inside the phone, and and interactive features build into the clear flip lid.
"Motorola Krave is uncompromising. It delivers high-quality multimedia experiences while remaining true to the way consumers expect a phone to work and feel," said Motorola’s VP for mobile devices Ken Hallman, in a statement. "The clear, touch-enabled flip over the large, high-resolution touch-screen is nothing like you’ve seen and yet it’s totally intuitive."
iPhone Phishing Threat
That shiny new iPhone might look good and do a lot, but it could also fall victim to a phishing scam, according to security researcher Aviv Raff.
CNET has reported that Raff has revealed both the mail and Safari browser apps on the iPhone could be fooled by a phishing attack. It’s possible for a hacker to send a mail that would seem to be from a trusted site – maybe a social networking or financial site – with a link to the site enclosed.
eBay Supports DKIM To Stop Phishing
Is there a computer user who hasn’t received an eBay or Paypal phishing e-mail? You know the ones, where there’s been a security violation and you need to follow the link and give all your account details. Except the link leads you to a spoof site, and your details are stolen. Now eBay and its Paypal subsidiary are working with Yahoo with their anti-phishing technology. The key is known as DomainKeys Identified Mail, or DKIM, which Yahoo is making available to its mail users very soon, and which might be expanded to eBay and Paypal. It uses encrypted signatures to establish the sender of the e-mail. Currently, most spam mail is spoofed, that is fake addresses. They’re able to get away with that because mail serves generally only check whether the domain in the address exists. With DKIM senders have to establish their identity by encrypting a key, or a tow-part signature, in part of the mail. Then the e-mail provider, puts another encrypted key into the mail that is linked to a key held in the Internet domain name system. The big problem, though, is that both sender and recipient need to be signed up to DKIM for it all to work. But the signs are that momentum for DKIM is growing, as the Yahoo technology is backed by Sendmail, Verisign, AOL, IBM and Google. With eBay and Paypal two of the most targeted companies for phishing mails, it makes sense for them to take the lead in this.
Yahoo Plans Unlimited Email Storage
In 2004, the yes-its-still-in-beta Google Mail set the world of Web-based mail services back on its heels by offering 1 gigabyte of online mail storage to all its users; Google has since increased that storage allocation to over 2.8 GB and Microsoft has tried to keep up with offering 2 GB of online mail storage, but now rival s plans to put an end to the storage race altogether by offering unlimited mail storage to the roughly 250 million Yahoo Mail users.
AT&T, Yahoo! Intro New Yahoo! Mail Beta
Membership does indeed have its privileges. AT&T and Yahoo! yesterday announced they were beta testing a new version of Yahoo! Mail through the two companies’ co-branded Internet services AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet and Dial. This beta will be available to all Yahoo! Mail users in general in the coming months.
The current Yahoo! Mail beta, said the two companies, offers up a number of new enhancements for AT&T Yahoo! users and is the most significant set of improvements since the service first went live in 2001. These new or enhanced features include drag-and-drop e-mail organization, message preview, an integrated RSS reader with access to breaking news, blog entries and other feeds directly from Web mail, the ability to view multiple e-mails at the same time via tabbed navigation, right-click menus and address auto complete.
