eBay Scammer Wins Two Years In The Slammer

eBay Scammer Wins Two Years In The Slammer

For a while, Jason Hart of Manchester, England, believed that crime could pay. He sold a number of items on eBay, including 20 Xboxes, mobile phones, and tickets to the Ryder Cup, concerts, and other events. All in all, he made £23,500 (about $36,000) between September 2006 and April 2007.

That’s a profitable venture. Very profitable, in fact, since he never sent the buyers any of the items he sold. When those buyers pursued him for the goods, he came up with a string of excuses, the BBC reports, the ultimate of which was calling the local paper, posing as his father, to say Jason Hart had died. Finally complaints by customers to the police prompted an investigation, and authorities worked with eBay.

UK Trials Biometric ID Cards

UK Trials Biometric ID Cards

The British Labour government has argued that its controversial biometric national ID card scheme, which it plans to roll out nationally, will cut terrorism and illegal immigration. The two opposition parties both disagree and have vowed to scrap the cards if they come into power.

Yes, the ID card scheme raises political temperatures. But it’s going to be trialed for airside workers at two airports, Manchester and London City, for an 18-month period. As well as a photograph, the cards will contain fingerprint data. In a fit of generosity the government will waive the £30 (around $50) per person fee for the cards in the trial.

Stolen UK Govt. Computer Sold On eBay

Stolen UK Govt. Computer Sold On eBayZDNet has reported that a laptop stolen from the British Home Office has surfaced, with a CD of data under thekeyboard. It was discovered when a customer took it into a Manchester repair centre because the machine wasn’t working. The computer had evidently been purchased on eBay.   Jonathan Parry, sales manager at Leapfrog Computers, told the site, "Underneath the keyboard in thelaptop was a CD labelled ‘Home Office: Private and Confidential’. We tested it and it was fully encrypted, and so was the laptop. We contacted [the police] and they seized the equipment." Thecomputer had a sealed optical drive, meaning that someone had removed the laptop keyboard and placed the CD there. According to the Home Office, both it and Greater Manchester Police were investigating the laptop. Over 500 government computers have vanished in the last seven years, many of them without any data encryption.

Resistance: Fall Of Man Under Fire Again

Resistance: Fall Of Man Under Fire AgainA few months ago Manchester Cathedral demanded an apology from Sony and went so far as to consider legalaction over the use of the building for a violent scene in the game Resistance: Fall of Man, without permission. Now the Church is up in arms again over the fact that the game has been nominated fora BAFTA award.   The Dean of Manchester, Reverend Rogers Morgan Govender received his apology back then, but now he and other church leaders are demandingthat BAFTA drop the game’s nomonation.   “It is a disgrace that ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’ has been short-listed for a BAFTA," Govender told TechNewsWorld. "Sony has admitted that it did not have permission to film or use Manchester Cathedral in its computer game and said, and I quote, ‘We areconfident that there is no legal requirement for us to seek such permission.’"   Sony never pulled the game from the shelves, and must be happy at the nomination, especially as it’sreceived several mediocre reviews. Certainly a renewed round of publicity in the wake of the nomination won’t hurt sales at all. Sony has insisted all along that the game was never meant totake place in the real world, but in an alternate Europe during the 1950s.

Sony Apologizes To Manchester Cathedral

Sony Apologizes To Manchester CathedralOn Friday Sony issued a public apology for including a shootout in Manchester Cathedral as part of itsResistance: Fall of Man video game.   The Church of England, outraged at the unauthorized use of the venue, had been putting pressure on the company. Not only had it wanted the apology, it haddemanded that Sony stop selling the game.   The apology was published in the Manchester Evening News after Sony executives had met withChurch leaders.   “It was never our intention to offend anyone in the making of this game, and we would like to apologize unreservedly to them for causing that offense, and to all parts ofthe wider community who we might also have offended,” Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President David A. Reeves said in the apology. He also promised that the cathedral would not be used inany future games.   However, Sony also said that with the apology, they consider the matter closed. Although there was no comment from Church leaders, that must have raised their ire.  Manchester is a center of gun crime in England, and the Church there has been working to try and halt the violence. One of the demands to Sony had been a donation to the Church’s educationdepartment, which helps the local community.   Church officials have offered no more comment on the matter to date.

Church Threatens Sony Over Playstation Game

Church Threatens Sony Over Playstation GameA row has developed between Manchester Cathedral in England and Sony, about its Playstation game Resistance: Fall of Man that has the church threatening to take the giant game manufacturer to court.   At the heart of the conflict is a scene in thewar game that takes place in the cathedral nave involving the shooting and killing of hundreds of virtual enemies.   The Church of England asserts that Sony didn’t obtain permission beforeusing the interior in the game, and is demanding not only an apology, but removal from sale of the game, which has already sold over a million copies. Failing that, they may consider legal action.  In response, Sony claimed that it believed it had sought all the appropriate permissions.   Manchester has been a centre of U.K. gun crime in recent years (although possession of guns isillegal), and its notorious Moss Side area has been a haven for shooters and drug dealers. According to the Right Rev. Nigel McCulloch, the Bishop of Manchester,   “For a globalmanufacturer to re-create one of our great cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have guns battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible.”  Sony has pointed out that the footage is created, rather than taken from photographs or video, for the game that’s set in an alternate 1950s Europe and aimed at an adult audience. However, a statement from Sony said,   “Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is aware of the concerns expressed by the Bishop of Manchester and thecathedral authorities… and we naturally take the concerns very seriously.”

Chapter 11 Expected For Acclaim

“Further information emerging from embattled publisher Acclaim this afternoon indicates that contrary to some media reports today, no redundancies have been made at the firm, but a filing forChapter 11 protection is expected.

The publisher’s studios in Manchester, UK and Austin, Texas are shut today, with employees in Austin believed to be locked out of the offices due to unpaid rent, and staff in Manchester told to go home this morning.

However, a senior US source told GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon that despite reports claiming that staff at these sites have been laid off, this is not the case, and no redundancies have been made at the firm so far.”
