The Most Complete Topographic Map Of The World

The Most Complete Topographic Map Of The World

It is, they claim, the most complete topographic map of Earth ever made. With detailed measurements taken by NASA’s Terra spacecraft, the new map just published by NASA and the Japanese government covers 99% of the Earth’s surface – although the poles have been left off.

The map was created by processing or correlating 1.3 million stereo-pair images snapped that had been taken by the Japanese Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emissions and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on board Terra. After that natural color was simulated on the data before it was superimposed over terrain models to give the final image.
The data is free for anyone to download

Google Buys 5 More Years of Tele Atlas Maps

Google may already be using TomTom-owned TeleAtlas to supply much of its mapping data in Europe, but it reaffirmed its commitment to the Dutch company on Monday with a contract for five more years worth maps. Although financial details were not disclosed, the agreement will be an unusual two-way exchange, with Google supplying Tele Atlas with user-submitted map modifications to keep its map data accurate and updated.

WunderMap Displays Weather on Google Maps

WunderMap Displays Weather on Google Maps

Weather geeks who find themselves bouncing from site to site to check different forms of radar now have one more choice, over at Weather Underground. The site introduced its brand new WunderMap on Wednesday, a service it claims is the most user-friendly and interactive on the Web.

Unlike Weather.com which borrows map interface from Microsoft, and sites like AccuWeather that simply use animated map images, the WunderMap borrows its interface from the ever-popular Google Maps. Users can view NEXRAD radar, weather stations, satellite views, and even webcams by clicking on and off different layers of the map. Each layer also includes options for fine tuning – when viewing NEXRAD, for instance, users can choose how much opacity the layer should have, how many frames should be animated, and even the delay between frames.

TomTom To Buy Tele Atlas for $2.5 Billion

TomTom To Buy Tele Atlas for $2.5 Billion

TomTom, the world’s largest maker of GPS navigation systems for cars, has announced it plans to buy its primary map supplier Tele Atlas for €1.8 billion in cash, or about $2.5 billion in U.S. dollars. The move is seen as a way for TomTom to consolidate its business and move towards a service model: as the market for GPS devices becomes more saturated, GPS manufacturers will be able to make less money selling devices, and will instead have to shift towards service offerings to make their brands competitive.

Garmin Debuts Nuvi Widescreen GPS Units

Garmin International has introduced two new widescreen GPS systems&mash;the nuvi 200W and nuvi 250W—intended for in-car use, offering 4.3inch touchscreen displays, integrated map information, and a selection of convenience applications.

“Many customers want a larger display on their personal navigation device, and the nuvi 200W series delivers,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “The nuvi sets the industry standard for elegant design and a simplified user interface, and these newest units represent the pinnacle in widescreen entry-level PNDs.”

Rand McNally Navigation for Cell Phones

Venerable map maker Rand McNally (they’ve been around 150 years!) has introduced Rand McNally MONA, a $9.99/month mobile phone application which puts maps and directions right on your mobile phone without any additional equipment or expensive map updates.

As a cell phone application, MONA (which stands for Mobile Navigator) doesn’t have a dedicated interface for mapping functions, so it relies a bit on using a home or office computer to set up details before you head out on the road. Users enter destination addresses online, and they’ve automatically uploaded to the users’ phone. Once there, MONA’s “easy-to-use” interface lets users find their destinations reliably, complete with voice prompts with turn-by-turn directions, and automatic alerts and re-routing if drivers miss a turn. (Or, um, if they turn the wrong way. Not that I’ve ever done that. I’ve heard it happens. Just saying.)

Google Debuts Local Search Service

Consumers who type in local information such as zip code, city, or town names–in addition to whatever they are searching for–will now see any results that match that local data at the top of the page. In addition, a compass will appear next to some results, bringing users to a map of the specified region. The map points consumers to the exact location for the result selected.
