Consumers Increase HDTV Acceptance

The survey results reinforce CEA’s market research projection that total digital television (DTV) unit shipments will surpass analog television sales for the first time in 2005, based on the “digitaltuner mandate” issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The first time that dollar sales of digital television surpassed analog television was in 2003.

“HDTV is here to stay,” CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro said of the survey findings. “Nearly all consumers are now aware of HDTV and more consumers than ever intend to make their next TV an HDTV. The consumer acceptance ‘obstacle’ is no more. Consumers want HDTV now more than ever; it is now up to the content creators and distributors to deliver it.”

Digital Camera Sales Top $2.7B In 2004

Unit sales growth was even stronger, as the total for 2004 hit 18.85 million units, an increase of 28 percent compared to unit sales in the previous year.

CEA Market Research shows that consumers also increasingly turned to higher resolution digital cameras. Digital cameras with five or more megapixel resolutions sold more than 7 million units, an increase of 176 percent compared to 2003. Digital cameras with four megapixel resolutions were also extremely popular and totaled more than 3.78 million units, an increase of 141 percent from the previous year.

Super Bowl Boosts DTV Sales

As Americans prepare for the nation’s unofficial holiday — Super Bowl XXXIX – consumer electronics retailers are ringing up huge sales of digital television (DTV) products. According to figuresreleased today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), December 2004 factory-to-dealer sales of DTV products hit 927,000 units, marking a 45 percent increase over December 2003. Total DTVsales for 2004 reached 7.2 million units, an increase of 75 percent compared to year-end 2003.

With November 2004 holiday sales of 844,000 units, the 10 percent increase in December sales demonstrates that retailers know that an upgrade to a high-definition television (HDTV) is a priority to consumers before this year’s Super Bowl,” said CEA Director of Market Research Sean Wargo

CE Sales Jump 11% In 2004

Manufacturer-to-dealer sales of consumer electronics will reach a record-high of $125.7 billion in 2005, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These sales mark an 11 percent increase over the $113.5 billion dollars sold in 2004. The figures are part of CEA’s bi-annual U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecasts report. The report was released yesterday following a presentation by CEA Director of Industry Analysis Sean Wargo, during the International CES, the world’s largest annual technology tradeshow, being held January 6-9 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

DTV Sales Top 6 Million Through November

Unit sales for November totaled 843,784 units and dollar sales topped $600 million.

“With holiday sales still going strong, we expect 2004 will finish on a high note for DTV,” said CEA Director of Market Research Sean Wargo. “Sales have gone through the roof this year and the trend will only continue in the coming years, particularly as consumers become acquainted with products like Digital Cable Ready that make the transition to HDTV seamless.”

CEA Market Research projects that 6.97 million DTV units will be sold in 2004, 10.77 million in 2005, 16.77 million in 2006, 23.25 million in 2007 and 27.05 in 2008.

Survey Shows Teens Are Heavy Tech Users

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) today announced the release of a new market research survey on teen consumer electronics (CE) consumers.

Nearly all teens in this phone survey, 98 percent, said they watched a TV in the past 30 days, 91 percent used a DVD player, 87 percent used a desktop computer and 86 percent used a VCR. Substantial majorities also reported using wireless phones, videogame consoles and computer-based CD burner/writers over the last month.

October DTV Sales Near 1 Million Mark

This is marking a 136 percent increase in unit sales over October 2003 and a 102 percent rise in dollar sales.

“We expected DTV sales to be strong in the final months of the year, but to see the numbers in print is an exhilarating affirmation of DTV’s success,” said CEA Director of Industry Analysis Sean Wargo. “Year-to-date DTV sales total 5.4 million units and are on track to meet CEA’s initial forecast of 6.9 million units.”

Media Servers Increasing In Popularity

New consumer research from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) finds high satisfaction among digital camera owners and a potential burgeoning market for media servers. The surveys found thatsome 84 percent of current owners are satisfied with their digital camera and 53 percent of consumers are interested in having the ability to store music on a PC and listen to it anywhere in thehouse. The surveys were released here Monday during CEA’s annual Industry Forum, which concluded Wednesday. The Industry Forum unites key executives from top technology companies to discuss markettrends, business strategy and the future of the consumer electronics industry.

As a prelude to “Digital Cameras Get Competition,” – a panel session investigating the impact of digital camera phones on the traditional digital still camera market – CEA Senior Industry Analyst Sean Wargo presented the results of CEA’s digital camera survey of online adults. The survey showed that 61 percent of online adults have a digital still camera and that 49 percent consider it their primary camera. Current CEA shipment figures show that 39 percent of total US households own a digital camera.
