Inside Activision’s Biggest Hits at E3

Inside Activision

Besides managing to embarrass ourselves on plastic skateboards while strolling through Activision’s thumping E3 booth (courtesy of DJ Shadow on a set of turntables), we also had a chance to check out a few more of the most exciting upcoming titles in person.

Blur, which comes from Project Gotham Racing developers Bizarre Creations, might be best described as the offspring of one of those games mated with Mario Kart. No cartoony bobbleheads or turtle-shooting here, but the cars steer with an unnatural, whiplash-inducing quickness, soak up more damage than an Abrams tank could handle, and pick up power-ups like missiles and boosts along the way. All told, it looks like a blast, though, and we like how Bizarre has gone out of its way to avoid embarrassing style cut scenes (Need for Speed Underground, we’re looking in your direction), and instead delivers storyline through a clever messaging system after races.

April Game Sales See Big Successes for Nintendo and Sony

April Game Sales See Big Successes for Nintendo and Sony

Maybe the video game industry isn’t as recession-proof as everyone thought: market research firm NPD has released its sales figures for 2009, and finds that U.S. sales of video games dropped 17 percent in April 2009 compared to the same month in 2008. Total revenue for the month was $1.03 billion across the industry—$510.7 million of that being games, with the rest being hardware and accessories.—and the numbers mark the second steep month of decline in a row.

Video Game Industry Racks Up Sales in February

Video Game Industry Racks Up Sales in February

Market analysis firm NPD has released its figures for video game console and software sales for February 2008—and if one were to judge by the video game industry alone, reports of a recession have been greatly exaggerated. Video game sales were 10 percent higher in February 2009 then they were in February 2008, and the industry racked up an 11 percent increase in sales compared to a year ago, pulling in $532.7 million in revenue for the month.

PS3 Shows Year-on-Year Sales Drop

PS3 Shows Year-on-Year Sales Drop

Market research firm NPD has released its video games sales figures for January 2009…and, despite the recession, the news for the industry was quite good, with January 2009’s sales representing a 13 percent increase over the same time last year. Apparently, even when times are tough, Americans are still willing to spend money on video games…potentially because they’re seen as a less-expensive form of entertainment than going out to movies, concerts, and other events.

Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo Wii remained the dominant player among game consoles, selling some 679,000 units during the month; the Nintendo DS handheld gaming system also moved 510,000 units. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 also saw strong numbers, moving 309,000 units.

Game Sales Saw Double-Digit Growth in 2008

Game Sales Saw Double-Digit Growth in 2008

Apparently, when the times get tough, the tough play…video games. A new Top Global Markets report that combines video game sales data from NPD, GfK Chart-Track, and Enterbain covering the U.S., UK, and Japanese markets (respectively) found that overall sales of video games in 2008 were up 11 percent—and this despite a fairly sharp drop in Japanese sales and a global economic downturn.

Overall sales in the three markets totaled up to 409.9 million units, compared with 367.7 million during 2007. The Japanese market was actually down 13 percent, which the report attributes to a shrinking PS2 market and a “decline in portable software.” The UK led the way in sales growth, with a 26 percent increase over 2007; the U.S. showed a 15 percent sales jump.

Nintendo Wii Sells 10.17 Million in 2008

Having consistently stomped the competing PlayStation 3 during 2008 and set sales records even during a recession, it should come as little surprise that the Nintendo’s Wii posted some pretty impressive numbers for the year – numbers that have never been touched by any other console. According to Nintendo, 10.17 million Wiis were sold in 2008 alone, a record-breaking figure for one-year console sales.

That number represents 55 percent of next-gen console sales, with both Microsoft and Sony getting packed into the remaining 45 percent share of the pie. Nintendo also dominated the sale of games, with the top four sellers for the year being Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl, in order.

NPD: Xbox 360 Sales Beat PS3 in September

Market research firm NPD has released new video game sales figures for September 2008, and while the Nintendo Wii is still far and away the top-selling video game system, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 shows surprising strength, trouncing the PS3 in the United States during September. According to NPD, Microsoft sold 347,000 Xbox 360 consoles during the month, following price cuts early in the month that put the least expensive Xbox 360 below the price of the Nintendo Wii. In comparison, Sony managed to sell 232,000 PlayStation 3 consoles during the month…although the Nintendo Wii was far-and-away the console winner, moving 687,000 units during September.

Blockbuster Deepens Commitment to Gaming

Blockbuster Deepens Commitment to Gaming

With video game sales breaking records in recent months and the high-profile release of Grand Theft Auto IV just around the corner, Blockbuster has announced that it will significantly expand its game business. Although the major rental chain already offers games, the shift will bring a broader selection of games to rent, more copies, as well as games for purchase, and hardware.

"We’re committed to offering a full assortment of everything gamers want in our stores – hardware, accessories and retail and rental games across all platforms,” said Rod Murray, Blockbuster’s vice-president of games merchandising, in a statement.

Nintendo Announces Many New Wii Titles

Nintendo Announces Many New Wii TitlesNintendo has introduced a whole slew of games for its Wii console at E3, with Wii Fit asthe flagship title.   By the end of 2007, Nintendo expects to add around 200 titles to its more than 150 games, many from outside publishers, and will include titles that can be downloaded forits virtual console.   But the company hopes for great things from its Wii Fit game, in which players get to exercise the whole body, using the Wii Balance Board, or WBB, which transmitsinformation to the console. It will offer a variety of different exercise activities from yoga to push-ups, virtual hula hoops and stretching, all conducted by virtual instructors.   It’sexactly the kind of thing to appeal to casual gamers, especially older ones, although Nintendo didn’t announce a release date for the game.   Although expected to be the big one,it’s just one of a number of upcoming titles for the Wii. There will be four Mario Bros. titles, including “Mario Kart Wii” and “Super Mario Galaxy.”  “Metroid Prime 3” will be added to the Metroid Prime series, and there are plenty of third-party titles from EA, Sega,Activision and Disney Interactive.   One of the more interesting Wii additions will be the WiiZapper, due later this year. It fixes onto the Remote and Nunchuk to resemble a gun, to be used with several games including “Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles” and “GhostSquad.”   “In less than eight months, Wii has proved itself the video game system for everyone, and we’re not letting up,2 said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.“We’re producing hit after hit after hit, supported by a long line of third-party publishers who have shifted their resources to help make Wii the most distinctive video game system inhistory.”

Nintendo Intros Specialized Wii Controllers

At its presentation at this year’s E3 Expo, Nintendo outlined one way it intends to extend the sales dominance of its popular Wii gaming console: new controllers.

The Wii has captured attention from the gaming community and non-traditional gamers in part due to its price—cheaper than competing consoles from Microsoft and Sony—but also due to its innovative motion-sensitive controllers and how those controllers integrate into games like Wii Tennis and Wii Bowling. Now Nintendo plans to offer unique, custom controllers with a selection of forthcoming gaming titles, bringing the Wii experience to new places.
