Google Blacklists The Internet

If you tried searching on Google for a short while after 6.30 am Pacific Time on Saturday, you got a shock. Every search result was listed as potentially harmful, with the warning that each site “may harm your computer.”

Anyone clicking on a result was advised to find an alternative. The problem lasted for about 40 minutes.

Writing on the Official Google Blog, Marissa Mayer, vice president, search products and user experience, wrote:

"What happened? Very simply, human error."

Google Digitizes Old Newspapers

Google Digitizes Old Newspapers

Google announced yesterday at the TechCrunch50 conference in San Francisco that it’s partnering with around 100 newspapers to digitize old issues and make them available online. Readers will be able to see entire pages of the old papers, and, using a new algorithm, be able to skip directly to the article they want, according to the BBC.

Announcing the move, Google’s vice president of search products, Marissa Mayer, told the audience:

"This is huge. We’re branching into a new form of content."

"The compelling part of the product for me is to get a sense of context and the importance of what else happened that day."

Google Health to Debut in 2008

Google Health to Debut in 2008

Speaking at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Marissa MAyer, leader of Google’s search operation, revealed that the long-gestating Google Health initiative will formally debut in early 2008. The announcement follows Microsoft’s recent high-profile entry into the medical records and health information with HealthVault earlier this month.

Mayer pointed out that a great many Internet users already use Google as a starting point to search for health and medical information on the Internet, and the health and medical industries produce an enormous amount of data and information. She sees the arena as a good match for Google, who can apply its expertise in indexing, searching, and managing vast amount of information, and connect that data with an audience already searching for health and wellness informnation.

Google Universal Search Reveals All

Search engine leader Google has begun rolling out its new Universal Search, offering a more comprehensive set of search results spanning diverse online information sources, rather than being limited to just traditional Web sites. Google search results listings now compile search results spanning images, videos, maps, books, and traditional Web sites into a single search results list, with more types of content scheduled to be integrated into Universal Search over time.

Froogle Chased Into Hills

Google began the process today of trying to regain exposure for their online shopping site. The first major step in this is a name change from Froogle to Google Product Search.

Marissa Mayer, VP, Search & User Experience, and Jeff Bartelma, Product Manager, speaking on the official Google blog, got right to the point in talking about the name change by saying "Froogle offers a lot of great functionality and has helped many users find things to buy over the years, but the name caused confusion for some because it doesn’t clearly describe what the product does."

Lexar Jumps for Google

Lexar has announced that, beginning in January 2006, its portable JumpDrive USB flash drives will ship with Google applications pre-loaded, including Google Desktop, Google Toolbar, and photo organizer Picasa.

When customers plug in a Google-loaded JumpDrive, they’ll be promoted to install the free Google applications. If the user accepts the installation, the Google apps will automatically be installed and then removed from the USB drive.

Google’s applications are available for Windows only; presumably Mac and Linux users must manually format or otherwise remove the Google files from the JumpDrives to access the units’ full storage capacity. A few of Lexar’s JumpDrive offerings are also branded as Windows-only.

Google Says (Index) Size Doesn’t Matter

Online search engine Google turned seven years old today (quick, check out the birthday cake on its home page logo!), and announced that it has tripled the number of Web pages that its system can search. The announcement is undoubtedly intended to steal some thunder back from rival Yahoo which recently upstaged Google by claiming to search a substantially larger volume of Web pages.

Google Adds More Features To Toolbar Beta

“The newest tool bar adds the ability to turn information on Web pages into hyperlinks to related information, check spelling on Web-based forms and translate words from English to one of eight languages. Google, of Mountain View, Calif., derived the tool bar additions from existing features on Google’s popular Web search site, said Marissa Mayer, Google’s director of consumer Web products. “

One of the coolest features may be the Autolink feature which lets users insert hyperlinks into their web browser.

Google Launches Local Search Service

Type a keyword along with an address or city name into the search box at Google.com or at its newly designated site, Local.google.com, to find maps, locally relevant Web sites and listings frombusinesses in the area.

“A lot of times when people are looking for something, they want to do it on a local level…This is a core search promise,” said Marissa Mayer, Google’s director of consumer Web products, who helped build the service with a team of engineers from Google’s New York office.
