Apple Ramping Up to Design Its Own Chips?

Apple Ramping Up to Design Its Own Chips?

Technology darling Apple looks to be assembling a team of seasons industry veterans to design its own chips, potentially in a move to keep its products differentiated from the rest of the consumer electronics market…and help the famously secretive company keep its product plans under wraps. About a year ago, Apple acquired low-power microchip developer P.A. Semi, and recently engaged in a battle with IBM over hiring Mark Papermaster as the new senior VP for Devices Hardware Engineering—meaning he’s overseeing iPod and iPhone engineering. Now, the Wall Street Journal and other outlets are reporting that Apple has hired former AMD graphics CTOs Raja Moduri and Bob Drebin.

Apple Gets Papermaster

Apple Gets Papermaster

Apple announced today that its litigation with IBM over hiring Mark Papermaster as senior vice president of Devices Hardware Engineering has been resolved, and Papermaster will start work at Apple on April 24. Apple announced in November it was hiring Papermaster to take over for iPod chief Tony Fadell, but IBM immediately sought an injunction blocking the move, claiming a non-compete agreement Papermaster signed in 2006 would prevent him working for Apple for a year.

Papermaster worked on microprocessor architecture and servers at IBM for 25 years, and has described his position at Apple has having nothing to do with his previous work. IBM maintained that Papermaster would be in a position to disclose IBM trade secrets.

Court Bars Ex-IBMer from Position at Apple

Court Bars Ex-IBMer from Position at Apple

Only days after Apple announced that ex-IBM veteran Mark Papermaster would be taking over as chief of its iPod division, a New York court has barred him from taking the position. IBM succeeded on Friday in winning a preliminary injunction to temporarily prevent Papermaster him from working with Apple, due to a contract he signed in 2006.

According to IBM, the non-compete contract Papermaster signed in 2006 prevents him from working for IBM competitors for one year – which Apple qualifies as in the server business. Since Papermaster only left IBM in October and was slated to begin work at Apple in November, IBM claims he has violated the contract. New York Federal District Judge Kenneth Karas granted the company’s injunction on Monday, preventing Papermaster from taking the position until further discussion.

Apple’s iPod Wiz Steps Down

Apple

Steve Jobs may take the lion’s share of credit for the device that launched Apple to mainstream success – the iPod – but one of the other main men behind the curtain will be stepping down from his powerful position at Apple. On Tuesday, Apple announced that Tony Fadell would leave his position as senior vice president of the iPod division, and the company will bring in fresh blood from IBM as his replacement.

Both Fadell and his wife, Danielle Lambert, who was vice president of human resources at Apple, have stepped down from their positions at Apple to focus on their young family, according to Apple. Fadell will stay aboard in a reduced capacity, as an advisor to Steve Jobs.
