Wal-Mart to sell goods from other vendors on Web

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has launched an addition to its online business that has outside retailers selling nearly 1 million new items through Walmart.com, a move that could help the world’s largest retailer catch up in the online world.

The Walmart Marketplace has products from categories that include home, baby, toys, apparel, sporting goods and sports memorabilia. The company said it picked the retailers — including eBags, CSN Stores and Pro Team — because they have large product assortments and solid customer service track records.

Wal-Mart Looking to Succeed Where Circuit City Failed?

Wal-Mart Looking to Succeed Where Circuit City Failed?

Retailing powerhouse Wal-Mart seems to be planning to fill the retailing gap left by the bankruptcy and shutdown of Circuit City: according to the Wall Street Journal (subscription required), Wal-Mart is gearing up its consumer and home electronics offerings and preparing to go head-to-head with the likes of Best Buy and Amazon.com. Part of the plans include expanding Wal-Mart electronics departments to showcase flat-screen televisions, mobile phones, and PCs, and the company is also adding standalone sections featuring Apple and Nintendo products.

Approximately 3,500 Wal-Mart locations are slated to get the new electronics departments; some of the revamped departments will be debuting this week.

Microsoft to Launch Retail Stores

Microsoft to Launch Retail Stores

Microsoft has decided to take on Apple head-to-head in the retail business, announcing that it has hired former Wal-Mart executive David Porter to spearhead a new retail storefront effort. Porter comes to Microsoft from DreamWorks Animation, but before that spent 25 years at Wal-Mart, where he was eventually VP and general manager of entertainment—and helped Wal-Mart into one of the biggest music and movie retailers on the planet.

“There are tremendous opportunities ahead for Microsoft to create a world-class shopping experience for our customers,” Porter said. “I am excited about helping consumers make more informed decisions about their PC and software purchases, and we’ll share learnings from our stores with our existing retail and OEM partners that are critical to our success.”

Lawsuits Target Wal-Mart/Netflix Deal

Lawsuits Target Wal-Mart/Netflix Deal

Remember back in 2005 when mega-retailer Wal-Mart abruptly left the DVD rental business and signed a deal with then-nascent Netflix to handle DVD rentals on its behalf? Turns out not everyone considers the deal to be water under the bridge. A new series of lawsuits are emerging, targeting both Wal-Mart and Netflix, alleging that the two companies negotiated Wal-Mart’s exit from the DVD rental business in a way that led to both companies benefitting illegally.

Wal-Mart to Offer iPhones December 28

Wal-Mart to Offer iPhones December 28

Mega-retailer Wal-Mart has confirmed the rumors: as of Sunday, December 28, the company will be selling Apple’s iPhone 3G…although the retailer hasn’t been able to finagle a substantially discounted price on the handsets. Wal-Mart plans to offer the black 8 GB edition of the iPhone 3G for $197 and the 16 GB edition (in black or white) for $297, with each price representing a mere $2 discount over retail prices from Apple, AT&T, and (the only other retailer currently offering the iPhone) Best Buy. Best Buy is currently discounting the iPhone; Wal-Mart says it will match any local competitor’s advertised price on the same item within the same promotional period.

iPhone Coming to Wal-Mart...At What Price?

Industry reports have discount megastore Wal-Mart lined up to become the second major brick-and-mortar retailer to offer the Apple iPhone 3G…and while wild rumor and speculation have had Wal-Mart angling for a special 4 GB edition of the iPhone it could offer for as low as $99, more credible sources have Wal-Mart putting the standard 8 GB edition on sale for $197—just $2 cheaper than everywhere else.

Reports also differ on Wal-Mart’s plans to introduce the device: some have it pushing to offer iPhones by December 15 to catch the Christmas rush; others have the retailer waiting until December 28.

FCC Fines Retailers Over TV Transition

FCC Fines Retailers Over TV Transition

The Federal Communications Commission has handed out more than $6 million in fines (PDF) to retailers and two television suppliers for violating rules about labeling and importing televisions that won’t work after the United States’ digital television transition on February 17, 2009. The retailers were cited for failing to properly label analog-only TVs, while the suppliers were cited for importing analog-only TV after an FCC deadline.

Retailers Sears and K-Mart got the stiffest fines of almost $1.1 million apiece; Wal-Mart came in second with $992,000, while Circuit City managed third place with $712,000. Other penalized retailers include Fry’s, Target, Target, Best Buy, CompUSA.

Memorex Gets in Two Digital Photo Frames

Memorex Gets in Two Digital Photo Frames

Consumer electronics brand Memorex has rolled out two new entries in its digital photo frame line, and what they lack in tech-savvy specifications and capabilities, they may make up for in price, distribution (Memorex is distributing them through K-Mart), and a special appeal to snap them up as Mothers’ Day gifts—perhaps pre-loaded with family photos!

"Digital picture frames are becoming so popular in the home and as gift items," said Memorex brand manager Carla Pihowich, in a statement. "Memorex has designed these frames to be a cut above the ordinary design, with feminine graphics that will delight the mom in everyone’s life."

Wal-Mart Pulls Linux gPCs From Stores

Wal-Mart Pulls Linux gPCs From Stores

Giant retailer Wal-Mart has ended its experiment with offering inexpensive Linux-based PCs, saying they just aren’t what consumers wanted. Wal-Mart had begun offering the $!99 gPC, made by Taiwan’s Everex, inn bout 600 stores late last year. The company says it sold out the gPC inventory that it moved into its stores, but elected not to restock the systems. Wal-Mart will continue to offer the gPC online, noting that they were selling it much more effectively online than in their retail stores.

Wal-Mart Drops HD DVD

Mega-retailer Wal-Mart may be putting one of the final nails in the coffin of Toshiba’s HD DVD high-definition disc format by announcing it will exclusively support the Blu-ray disc format and compatible hardware. Wal-Mart will phase HD DVD discs and products out of its stores by June 2008.

“We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases,” said Wal-Mart senior VP Gary Severson, in a statement. “With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term.”
