Marvel Comics Offers Digital Back Issues
It might seem like Marvel Comics characters are everywhere these days, what with recent franchise and feature film treatments of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil and Electra (ahem), The Incredible Hulk, The Punisher, and (soon) Iron Man. The comic book industry has established itself as prime source material for mainstream entertainment…so why are comics themselves largely relegated to niche shops and out-of-the-way stores? Comic book publishers would like their wares to be present where young people live—and these days, that means on the Internet.
Sega, Marvel Bring More Heroes to Gaming
Marvel Entertainment and Sega announced today they are teaming to bring more of Marvel’s characters to video game screens. Having already a deal to create titles for Iron Man, the companies have expanded this relationship to create games also based around the Captain America, Incredible Hulk and Thor characters.
In relation to these new characters Marvel has awarded Sega an exclusive, multi-year agreement to develop titles for console, handheld and PC platforms based upon both the classic comic books and planned feature film adaptations. Sega plans to develop a title to be based on the upcoming Incredible Hulk feature film hitting theaters June 13, 2008. Games based onCaptain America and Thor will follow, though the timing of those feature film projects, currently in development, has not yet been determined.
Marvel Super Heroes Race to Video Games
Marvel Entertainment was busy at E3 this week partnering with various video game publishers for titles which make use of a wide array of comic super heroes. According to a press release put out by Marvel, here is what gamers can expect and from which publisher:
Activision, Marvel Team for Super Hero Fest
Activision and Marvel are getting ready to bring a whole lot of super hero action your way as they today confirmed development of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, an action/RPG hybrid which will be available for all next-gen gaming systems as well as current-gen, handheld and PC platforms this fall.
In Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, according to this Activision press release posted at Comic Book Resources, over 140 Marvel characters will be brought together in the largest roster of comic book characters ever seen in a video game. Players assume the roles of more than 20 Marvel Super Heroes including Spider-Man, Wolverine, Blade and Captain America, and “through their actions determine the fate of both planet Earth and the Marvel universe – revealed in one of multiple epiloguesâ€.
Marvel, Activision Ink RPG Video Game Deal
Get ready to play your favorite Marvel character in a computer superhero role playing game – Activision and the comic book publisher have inked a deal which allow the video game company an extended license to access the Marvel universe.
Under the terms of the license, the companies said, Activision will be grated the exclusive rights to develop and publish cross platform “non-persistent†role playing games which use a large ensemble cast of characters from Marvel’s line of heroes. The first game under this agreement is expected some time in 2007.
Microsoft Nabs Marvel Multiplayer Games
Microsoft Corporation and Marvel Enterprises have announced Microsoft will have exclusive rights to develop and publish massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) featuring Marvel superheroes like Spider-Man, The Hulk, the X-Men, and the Fantastic 4. The games titles will be developed for Microsoft’s forthcoming Xbox 360 gaming console, with the first title expected to ship in 2008.
Marvel Sues Over City Of Heroes
“The lawsuit claims South Korea-based NCSoft and San Jose-based Cryptic Studios violated Marvel’s trademark characters in their game City of Heroes. Marvel seeks unspecified damages and an injunction against the two companies to stop using its characters.
The personal computer game enables players to design superheroes’ look and abilities and then battle against other players’ characters in a virtual city. Like similar so-called massively multiplayer role-playing games where thousands of players can be playing simultaneously at any given time, City of Heroes claims to offer a myriad of combinations so that no two players’ characters are exactly the same.
