Matsushita Planning 37-inch OLED TVs?

Matsushita Planning 37-inch OLED TVs?

According to the Japanese trade daily Sankei Shimbun, electronics giant Matsushita—still in the process of transitioning its corporate identity to its better-known sub-brand Panasonic—is putting the finishing touches on plans to mass-produce 37-inch OLED televisions within three years. If the plans bear out, it would make Matsushita the first manufacturer producing OLED televisions over 30 inches in size, and could enable Matsushita to challenge Samsung for the top spot in the flat-screen television market.

According to the report, Matsushita is considering initial prices around ¥150,000 (roughly $1,400), although Matsushita itself said only that the company is working on commercializing OLED televisions at some point in the future.

Matsushita Changing Name to Panasonic

Matsushita Changing Name to Panasonic

In a move which may mark the end of an era in the electronics industry, Japan’s Matsushita has announced it will change the name of the company away from that of its famous founder and instead adopt the name of its most well-known global brand: Panasonic.

Matsushita was founded in 1918, Matsushita was one of the major Japanese businesses to take the global stage after World War II, with founder Konosuke Matsushita embodying one of the rags-to-riches stories of the 20th century: sent to work in Osaka by his family at a young age, and started his company at the age of 23 on the basis of a new light socket he designed. His humanitarian ideals and management style have often been cited as central tenets of the company.

Matsushita, Hitachi Talking LCD Panel Deal

Matsushita, Hitachi Talking LCD Panel Deal

Back when mass-market flat panel televisions started to look more like a reality than some crazy prop on a Star Trek show, Japanese Matsushita bet heavily on plasma technology, believe it would be the most cost effective flat-screen technology at sizes over 40 inches. But—surprise—the LCD makers have been catching up, and sales of plasma systems have been eroding in favor of unexpectedly big (and comparatively inexpensive) LCD displays.

Panasonic Recalls 6,000 Notebook Batteries

In a development apparently unrelated to major notebook computer battery recalls recently issued by Dell and Apple, Matsushita announced today it is recalling some 6,000 batteries shipped with Panasonic Let’ Note CF-W4G notebooks sold in Japan between April and May, 2005.

A Matsushita spokesperson has said that the problem involves the batteries’ covers, which uses a spring latch which could become loose and could potentially create a fire hazard if the cover were to be damaged in an impact. Matsushita says it has received two reports of trouble with the batteries, but no cases where the batteries have caught fire or caused injury. Matsushita declined to name the supplier of the recalled batteries, save to say that Matsushita had not made the batteries itself, nor had they been supplied by Sony.

Matsushita To Offer 103-inch Plasma TV

Today Matsushita proved its a company which isn’t afraid to think about the big picture, saying it plans to offer its 103-inch plasma television for sale by early 2007.

Matsushita scored a bit of a PR coup this January at the CES show in Las Vegas, unveiling its 103-inch set just as rival Samsung was crowing about it’s enormous 102-inch plasma display. That extra inch let Matsushita claim it had the biggest plasma TV in their world

LG and Panasonic Settle Plasma Dispute

“South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. and Japan’s Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. filed lawsuits against each other last year, claiming infringements on patents related to plasma technology. Thesuits have led to a halt of imports of LG panels into Japan and Matsushita panels to South Korea.

The two companies have been holding talks and are expected to agree on a settlement that would require LG to pay royalties to Matsushita while allowing each firm access to some of the other’s patents, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said. “

Panasonic Requests Ban Of LG’s Plasma’s

The Japanese firm stated that LG illegally used its patented technology for PDPs for the modules, and requested the local court and customs authorities to prevent the import of LG’s PDP modules.

LG Electronics said Matsushita’s request is an illegal trade practice and will take action against the Japanese electronics firm on Tuesday.

The Korean electronics firm is planning on filing a report to the WTO and stated that it will also take legal action against Matsushita’s infringement of its own patented technologies.

Matsushita Sues LG Over Plasma Patent

“Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. filed the lawsuit in Tokyo District Court against LG Electronics Inc. and a similar request with Japanese customs authorities on Monday, company spokesman Yoshihiro Kitadeya said from Osaka, where Matsushita is based.

Mr. Kitadeya said Matsushita has been in talks for a year, demanding that South Korea’s LG Electronics pay royalties on two patents he says are being violated in LG’s plasma display panels, or PDPs. No agreement was reached.”

This is the second suit of this type to hit Japan in a year. Samsung has already been sued by Fujitsu in Japan because of patent infringement. The plasma monitor market is definitely heating up and competition gets fiercer and TV prices continue to plummet.

Panasonic Preps First Blu-ray Recorder

Matsushita Electric Industrial, better known by its Panasonic brand name, will unveil its first Blu-ray Disc recorder next week, the Osaka, Japan-based company says.

The new machine is being launched to capture consumer demand for recording of high-definition television coverage of this year’s Olympic Games, which begin on August 11, Matsushita says. The new recorder will be unveiled on June 30 in Tokyo.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) is planning extensive coverage of the Olympics including 280 hours of live and recorded coverage in high definition via digital satellite.
