HP Joins HD-DVD Supporters

HP today straddled the fence in the next generation optical disc wars as they announced their support for the HD-DVD format being backed by the Toshiba camp in addition to already stated support for Sony’s Blu-ray Disc. This latest twist comes as different players in the computer and media industries continue to shift around and/or announce single support allegiances.

HP, trying to gap the widening field between the two camps, had originally requested the Blu-ray Disc Association to adopt two customer focused technologies used by the HD-DVD Promotions Group which allow consumers to make legal copies of video content (Mandatory Managed Copy) and also offer greater interactivity (iHD). Only the Mandatory Managed Copy feature was adopted by the trade group, most likely prompting HP’s announced move today.

CyberLink Demos Blu-ray Burning & Playback

The Blu-Ray format includes next-generation technology for storing high definition TV content (HDTV), provides greater storage capacity, and adopts core video formats such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC. PowerDVD–the world’s leading PC playback software–and burning applications–Power2Go, InstantBurn, PowerProducer–are Blu-ray ready.

“CyberLink’s participation at IFA Berlin with BDA is a great chance to demonstrate our support for key blue-laser burning and playback technologies,” said Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink Corp. “Our showcase along with HP demonstrates our readiness for and capabilities in working with tier-one hardware manufacturers to deliver complete solutions, while communicating the benefits of this next-generation disc media technology.”

Blu-ray Content Protection Plans Revealed

The Blu-ray Disc Association announced today they had adopted what they consider to be a comprehensive content management system for their new media format which will help fight piracy.

This new system, the association said, includes three main components. Advanced Access Content System, which is the foundation of the content management system, is

Blu-ray Favored Over HD-DVD in Poll

In the early days, war between the two futuristic disc formats would be decided not by sales, but instead by polls. And the winner of one of these early skirmishes would be Blu-ray Disc, trumping HD-DVD as the favorite amongst a random sampling of potential viewers.

The poll, conducted by Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, concluded consumers

Three Major Players Side With Blu-ray

As the DVD format wars continue to unravel, the current theme seems to be telling us that the gaming and computing industries will continue to support the Blu-ray storage format while Hollywood pushes ahead with support for HD DVD on the home video side.

“Blu-ray Disc offers a compelling, interactive entertainment and gaming platform that leaps substantially past current DVD standards,” said Eric Chu, director, consumer and mobile systems group of Sun Microsystems. “We look forward to playing a key role in supporting Blu-ray Disc’s inclusion of the Java platform to provide a unique set of interactive capabilities that will create new revenue opportunities for content vendors who use Blu-ray Disc for their movies, games or other products.”

JVC Joins Blu-ray Disc Association

JVC becomes one of the first companies to join the newly formed Blu-ray Disc Association. The BDA was created to broaden the opportunities for other companies to help develop, promote and establish Blu-ray Disc as an industry standard for high-definition optical storage.

“JVC’s decision to join in the development and promotion of the Blu-ray Disc format adds to the tremendous support we enjoy within the consumer electronics industry,” said Maureen Weber, chief BDA spokesperson and General Manager of HP’s Optical Storage Solutions Business, on behalf of the Blu-ray Disc Association. “We expect many, many more companies representing all segments of the consumer-electronics, PC and optical media industries to soon join them as members of the BDA.”

Blu-ray Disc Association Launches

The BDA supports the continued development and promotion of the Blu-ray Disc (BD) format.

Earlier this year, membership was opened to organizations interested in promoting the Blu-ray Disc (BD) format. The growth in membership follows the recent announcement by Sony that PlayStation 3 will support the Blu-ray Disc format and by Twentieth Century Fox that it would join the Association as a member of its Board of Directors.

MPEG-4 AVC Codec Added To Blu-Ray Spec

“With the addition of the MPEG-4 AVC High-Profile codec, we are offering content owners maximum functionality and flexibility for their high-definition packaged media,” said Blu-ray Disc spokesperson Maureen Weber, general manager of HP’s Optical Storage Solutions Business. “This is just one more example of Blu-ray Disc’s commitment to be the best medium for high-definition packaged media.”

Video codecs are used to compress video images for storage to a disc and then decompress them for viewing. A critical piece to Blu-ray Disc was making sure that any advanced compression codecs included in the specification accomplish the compression and decompression with little or no visible loss of image quality.

Blu-Ray Spec Adds Microsoft’s VC-1 Codec

“We’ve been committed to adding advanced codecs to enrich the Blu-ray Disc format,” said Blu-ray Disc spokesperson Maureen Weber, general manager of HP’s Optical Storage Solutions Business. “We want to offer content providers a variety of compression codecs to suit their various needs. With the addition of Microsoft’s VC-1, we extend that option in a package that makes Blu-ray Disc’s capacity advantage even more substantial while still delivering the picture quality that consumers demand from high-definition technology.”

Blu-ray Disc Founders Approve Version 1.0

The Blu-ray Disc Founders approved the BD-ROM physical specification within the general timeframe originally outlined in the BD-ROM development roadmap. The completion of the physical specification is an important step because it provides disc manufacturers with the information they need to prepare their BD-ROM disc production lines.

“Blu-ray Disc (BD) is on schedule for companies to introduce BD-ROM players, drives and prerecorded software to consumers beginning in late 2005,” said Maureen Weber, general manager of HP’s Optical Storage Solutions Business. “Given the strong support from consumer electronics, PC and media manufacturers for BD, a wide variety of products is expected to eventually be available in every segment of the market.”
