Fujitsu expands into untapped markets

Fujitsu expands into untapped markets

Blessings come in small packages – especially if you are into the latest fad called tokidoki. (And let’s be honest: if you are into the goofy anime characters from Japan, you will probably not be attending any business meetings this decade anyway, so power and size are not huge factors.)

Fujitsu, a company that has long trailed behind the Dell and HP dynamos in recent years, is expanding into unheralded markets. The first venture: a palm-sized mini laptop that runs Windows Vista, uses a stylus for both a laptop mode or tablet mode, and has a limited edition screen print of tokidoki characters on the lid. The U820 is a remarkable device: it’s fast, has a unique design, and runs just about any app you care to try at that subnotebook size.

Nokia and Qualcomm Bury Patent Hatchet

Nokia and Qualcomm Bury Patent Hatchet

For years, Nokia and Qualcomm have been engaged in a series of international legal battles over key mobile technology patents covering everything from CDMA and GSM to UMTS, HSDPA, and Wi-Max. The companies have filed suit against each other in multiple countries, sought to have each other’s products banned from markets, and sparred over licensing terms, royalties, and other terms. The battle has been long and ugly, and was just punctuated earlier this week with a German court finding a Qualcomm patent on GSM technology is invalid.

Samsung Projectors Juggle Business, Movies

Business projectors may be optimized for PowerPoint presentations, spreadsheets and PDFs, but at the end of the day, everyone knows that they’re still going to be firing up a DVD now and then in the downtime. Samsung introduced a line of projectors tailored to both business use and movies on Tuesday with the A400 and D300 data projectors.

Acer Making WiMax Aspire 5920 for Sprint

Acer Making WiMax Aspire 5920 for Sprint

Computer maker Acer has begun showing off a new version of its Aspire 5920 notebook computer with an integrated WiMax wireless broadband module. Acer plans to offer the WiMax-equipped model in the United States through Sprint, which is in the process of rolling out its Xohm WiMax service in major U.S. markets, as well as through other companies. According to Acer, the WiMax-enabled 5920 will be sold with a WiMax service plan in a manner similar to the way mobile phones are sold with wireless service contracts:

Navigon GPS Units Offer DirectHelp

Navigon GPS Units Offer DirectHelp

GPS newcomer Navigon has launched its Navigon 2100 and Navigon 2120 Max GPS models in the United States and Canada (respectively), offering a 4.3-inch antiglare screen, text-to-speech spoken directions, route planning, and a “reality view that provides 3D, photo-realistic views of complex exchanges and intersections, complete with road layout and the actual text that appears on road signs. And, if you get stuck or lost, a DirectHelp feature immediate pulls up directions and phone numbers for nearby emergency services.

“Providing consumers with affordable products, without sacrificing features that play a significant role in their navigation experience, is our top focus when bringing new products to market,” said Navigon Americas president Andreas Hecht, in a statement.

SpaceNavigator Sheds Weight for Notebooks

3Dconnexion’s SpaceNavigator has already earned a healthy reputation among engineers, Google Earth explorers and others as an easy way to navigate 3D worlds, but its clunky weight of over a pound has always made it less than ideal for anywhere but a desktop. The company aims to fix that with a new notebook edition of the device, which cuts the weight by half for mobile use.

The SpaceNavigator for Notebooks weighs just 0.55 pounds and adopts slightly smaller dimensions to make it more appropriate for use with laptops. It also sports a new cap design and a travel case to keep it safe in transit. Like the original, users can push, pull, slide and rotate its knob-like interface to navigate through every 3D axis easily.

Sprint Delays WiMax, Vodafone Pushes LTE

Sprint Delays WiMax, Vodafone Pushes LTE

At this year’s CTIA trade show, Sprint has confirmed that it is delaying the rollout of its WiMax-based Xohm wireless broadband service until later in 2008. Sprint claims the delay has nothing to do with the WiMax technology itself—which the company already has up and operating in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area and Chicago—but a matter of making sure the commercial launch fully meets customer expectations.

Everex CloudBook Max Packs Integrated WiMax

In an attempt to make its sub-compact CloudBook stand out in a crowd of similar-spec Asus Eee clones, Everex has taken the notebook to the next level of connectivity by adding built-in WiMax support. The new CloudBook Max, announced Tuesday, will connect up with Sprint’s upcoming Xohm network, offering wireless Internet access far beyond the average Wi-Fi hotspot.

“Consumers and mobile workers want to experience the real Internet and all their favorite applications with the same high speed and full functionality whether at their desk or on the go,” said Richard Brown, VIA Technologies’ vice president of marketing, in a statement. “The new Everex CloudBook Max paves the way for truly seamless computing whatever your location.”

Navigon rounded out the budget end of its GPS line-up on Tuesday with the introduction of the 2100 max and 2120 max personal navigation devices. Both units offer the same standard features Navigon offered in the 2100, such as 3D Reality View, and tack on additional features.

The biggest change: the old 3.5-inch screen on the 2100 grows to 4.3 inches on the 2100 max and 2120 max. The new models also feature DirectHelp, which lets users pinpoint their locations and find nearby services such as hospitals, pharmacies and roadside assistance quickly.
