Should Apple License the iPhone OS?

I was reading coverage of a recent Steve Ballmer talk, in which he recommended that Apple separate its hardware and the software businesses, much as Microsoft did with Windows if Apple wants to gain dominant market share. This is an interesting suggestion, and I think one that would be fun to explore for a number of reasons. Two of the biggest software players in the phone market (Google and Microsoft) are going down this separation path, and Apple, much like they were in the 80’s, is not.

Maxtor BlackArmor 320GB Review

Summary

If you’re the paranoid type or just someone who cannot afford to have his or her data stolen, the Maxtor BlackArmor external backup drive will likely bring you a large dose of piece-of-mind. Data on the drive is encrypted with a key at the hardware level using government-grade 128-bit AES encryption, so if you lose it whoever finds it will have zero chance of recovering the data. Even better, if someone steals the drive and doesn’t have the password, they can reformat the drive but the process destroys the encryption key, making all the data inaccessible even by data recovery professionals. This high level of security comes with a high price tag though, and the drive also suffers a few design drawbacks too, so you should only consider it if data security is a top priority.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus 500GB Review

Summary

The fourth iteration of Maxtor’s popular OneTouch external backup drives has arrived in a sexy new shell and a brand-new software package. It’s a kitchen sink drive that does everything under the sun, from backing up files to syncing folders to total system recovery in the case of drive failure and more. It’s easily the most full-featured backup drive we’ve ever tested, and though it has a few flaws it is still one of the best backup drives available.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini (160GB) Review

Summary

Notebook users are often in a pickle when it comes to protecting their precious data, and Maxtor (recently purchased by Seagate) has come up with an ingenious solution in the One Touch 4 Mini. This portable backup drive truly does it all, from offering plenty of space to transfer files between computers, to offering fantastic backup and security options for the truly paranoid.

Features and Design

The Maxtor OneTouch line has been around for awhile now, both in its external drive form and the “mini” versions, which are portable USB 2.0 drives. The company has revamped the series and launched the OneTouch 4 Mini with all new software and a new form factor.

Maxtor Fusion 500GB Home Media Hub

Although its consumption by drive-maker Seagate has just been completed, Maxtor is quietly rolling out its Maxtor Fusion personal media hub, which combines the concepts of network-attached storage (NAS) with personal media servers to act as a central media repository on your home network for your photos, music, and videos.

Based in part on technology developed by Fabrik (co-founded by former Maxtor honcho Mike Cordano), the Maxtor Fusion doesn’t look a whoel lot different from the company’s OneTouch backup drives

Maxtor Adds Mini OneTouch III External HD

Maxtor, a supplier of hard drives and consumer storage solutions, today rolled out their smallest form factor yet for external storage. The new Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition drives, which come in 60GB or 100GB and price for $149.95 and $199.95 respectively, are available now.

The OneTouch III Mini Edition drives, said Maxtor, weigh approximately seven ounces and are finished in titanium metallic paint. These drives, which are equipped with black rubber side panels for vibration protection, connect to a Windows 2000 or XP computer via USB 2.0. Data management options include automated backup, data encryption, data synchronization and system rollback to restore applications and operating system while keeping digital files current.

New Maxtor Backup Drive Streams Media

Maxtor today was touting a new backup hard drive which can also double as a media server. The Maxtor Shared Storage Plus drive, which ranges in size from 200GB to 500GB, will be available in October.

The Shared Storage Plus, Maxtor said, is a network backup hard drive which connects to a router to provide a centralized location for backing up computers’ data. It includes two USB ports for connecting and sharing things like USB printers and other external storage devices.

Maxtor Ships 500GB Hard Drive

The new 3.5-inch 500GB hard drives will feature a spindle speed of 7200RPM and will be available in SATA and ATA 133 interfaces. The 500GB hard drives will also be RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliant.

“Maxtor continues to focus on storage solutions tailored for specific market needs,” said David Reinsel, director of storage research at IDC. “The Maxtor 500GB hard drive underscores the company’s emphasis on differentiation across all of its product lines, and reflects competitiveness within market segments demanding the highest capacity drives.”

No price has been set, but the new drives are scheduled to ship in the fall of this year.
