If you tried searching on Google for a short while after 6.30 am Pacific Time on Saturday, you got a shock. Every search result was listed as potentially harmful, with the warning that each site “may harm your computer.”
Anyone clicking on a result was advised to find an alternative. The problem lasted for about 40 minutes.
Writing on the Official Google Blog, Marissa Mayer, vice president, search products and user experience, wrote:
"What happened? Very simply, human error."
Speaking at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Marissa MAyer, leader of Google’s search operation, revealed that the long-gestating Google Health initiative will formally debut in early 2008. The announcement follows Microsoft’s recent high-profile entry into the medical records and health information with HealthVault earlier this month.
Mayer pointed out that a great many Internet users already use Google as a starting point to search for health and medical information on the Internet, and the health and medical industries produce an enormous amount of data and information. She sees the arena as a good match for Google, who can apply its expertise in indexing, searching, and managing vast amount of information, and connect that data with an audience already searching for health and wellness informnation.
Legal battles over patents are almost always long and complex, and the patent rift between chipmakers Broadcom and Qualcomm has taken another turn as Judge Haldane Mayer on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit granted a stay in an exclusion order which banned companies from importing Qualcomm chips into the U.S. which have been found to infringe on Broadcom patents. The catch is who the judge granted the stay to: the phone makers LG, Samsung, T-Mobile, Kyocera, Sanyo Fisher, AT&T, and Motorola who incorporate Qualcomm’s chips into their phones. Qualcomm itself, however, is still barred from bringing the contested chips into the United States under a ban from the International Trade Commission.
File-sharing bad-boy BitTorrent has been making rumbles about launching its own video download service, and industry watchers have been keeping an eye on developments as the company announced a stream of partnership deals with major studios like Warner Bros., Fox, Viacom, and Lionsgate and saw its estimated usership climb to more than 130 million users.
Today, BitTorrent let the cat out of the bag, announcing the its BitTorrent Entertainment Network, a video download service offering movies, television shows, music videos, and free content, with what the company is touting as the most comprehensive library of downloadable digital entertainment ever amassed on the Web. Registered users will be able to rent feature films, purchase music videos and episodes of television shows, and publish their own video to be offered alongside major studio content.
Online search engine Google turned seven years old today (quick, check out the birthday cake on its home page logo!), and announced that it has tripled the number of Web pages that its system can search. The announcement is undoubtedly intended to steal some thunder back from rival Yahoo which recently upstaged Google by claiming to search a substantially larger volume of Web pages.
