The world of Internet radio is pretty much old hat for the home theater guru. Once a cryptic format that required a home theater PC and buckets of software to funnel into a speaker system, the raging river of content has been tamed over the years with a number of powerful devices that allow users to tap the flow in a more civilized way – sans computer.

The trouble is, most of these devices were intended for high-end home theater systems, meaning user-friendly interfaces and price were not exactly priorities. If Joe Consumer from Illinois wanted access to 6,000 channels say, from bed, well, he had better be prepared to shell out, and maybe be prepared to build a mini system around his nightstand.

Slim Devices Transporter

You may think you have the best sounding, best looking home entertainment system on the block. Your 50” plasma, TiVo, Blu-ray Disc player and Xbox 360 may be lacking one serious additionhowever: the Slim Devices Transporter.   Slim Devices, in their new Transporter home component unit, has essentially taken the technologies of their Squeezebox network digital audio player and put it into a great look, and most likely great sounding, device. Designed to look like it fitsright at home amongst your home entertainment gear, the Transporter is targeted towards audiophiles who will probably immediately take to the unit’s thick aluminum chassis in a black or clearanodized finish. Slim Devices Transporter - Front SlimDevices Transporter with Remote The look of the Transporter, which was designed by industrial designer Fred Bould, also includes dual fluorescent displays, which are reminiscent of retrostereo components. Also tied into the physical design of the Transporter are a variety of buttons and a dial for various controls on the front side, while the back sprouts a grouping of digital andanalog outputs as well as an Ethernet port.   Getting past the looks of the Transporter, it offers a nice collection of technologies geared towards bringing digital audio from your computer orthe Internet to your stereo speakers. This device, through integrated 802.11g wireless or 100Mbps wired connectivity, supports the following digital audio offerings: Apple Lossless, FLAC, WMALossless, AIFF, WAV, PCM, MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, MP2, MusePack, WMA, hundreds of Internet radio stations and music from the Rhapsody online music catalog. Working with the included software, theTransporter can play your music collection stored on a hard drive and supports the usage of playlists. In choosing the internal components for the Transporter, Slim Devices seems to have sought out a high end range of choices for producing a quality listening experience. This unit, forstarters, has the AK4396 DAC, chosen for its “high dynamic range and low distortion”. This is coupled with a gold plated circuit board to keep digital and analog sections separate, threeseparate “super-regulator” circuits for providing power to the DAC and analog stages and polyphenylene film capacitors for the balanced amplifiers, among other features.   The SlimDevices Transporter, which is firmware upgradeable, ships with a backlit, 32-key infrared remote. More information on this device, priced at an eye-catching $1,999, can be found at the Slim Devicesweb site.

Sonos Digital Music System

Sonos Digital Music System with Controller

The Sonos Digital Music System by Sonos is designed to bring your digital music files from your PC or Mac to other areas of your home. At the heart of the Sonos system are two components which interact together to provide a wireless entertainment experience no matter what room you may be in.

The Digital Music Network?s primary purpose is to be able to bring simultaneous, or different if you so desire, streams of your computer music to remote ZonePlayer boxes. In one particular example of this type of network entertainment delivery, a romantic dinner for two with jazz playing from your PC could be going on in the dining room while your children are in the garage listening to hip hop remotely off the same computer.
