JVC launched its 10 megapixel flash-based Everio GZ-HM400 camcorder in the Japan during the summer, but had now brought the unit to the United States in time for the beginning of the holiday electronics season. The GZ-HM400 features a 10 megapixel resolution (it can also shoot 9 megapixel still images) and can capture slow motion video at 120, 300, and 600 frames per second—enough to draw out those action shots into epic masterpieces. Plus, the unit packs consumer-friendly face detection and optical image stabilization to keep subjects smoothly in focus.

8MP Samsung Memoir Appears on T-Mobile
Though rumors of a 12-megapixel camera phone from Samsung have yet to come to fruition, the company did meet rumormongers halfway Thursday morning by pulling the sheet off its already-leaked Memoir. T-Mobile officially announced the new phone in a recent press release.
Much like the company’s camera phones in other countries, the SGH-t929 boasts a full 8-megapixel camera for snapping high-resolution still pictures, which is accompanied by a Xenon flash, 16x digital zoom, and five different shooting modes.
Other features include a A-GPS, 3G connectivity, and the ability to upload pictures taken with the camera directly to photo sharing sites like flickr, Kodak Gallery and Photobucket.
Panasonic Refreshes Lumix Camera Line
Panasonic has announced new members of its compact Lumix camera line, with a range of features designed to appeal to consumers and everyday photographers, including a 12 megapixel point-and-shoot camera and two new models technically capable of capturing high-definition video.
First up, the Lumix DMC-FX580 (to be available in silver and black) offers a 25mm Leica lens, a 12.1 megapixel resolution, a 3-inch LCD display, and a 5× optical zoom. The FX580 uses a touch-screen interface for configuring the camera, and feature’s Panasonic’s intelligent auto mode, which includes intelligent ISO selection, face detection, autofocus, intelligent exposure tracking, and automatic scene selection. The camera can also recognize individual faces, letting users give priority to a single person in a group shot—you know,the celebrity or the most significant person at an event. The DMC-FX580 can also record 1,280 by 720p high-definition video at 30fps.
GE Introduces Nine New Digital Cameras
General Electric wasn’t exactly greeted with open arms when it suddenly entered the digital camera business last year under the name General Imaging. But the company—and its Olympus veterans—is sticking with its business plan, rolling out nine new digital cameras it hopes will capture the hearts (and wallets) of consumers everywhere.
“We have said from the beginning that we would be a nimble company that responds to consumer needs, and our new cameras reflect that philosophy,” said General Imaging senior VP Rene Buhay, in a statement. “We think people are going to like what they see.”
Panasonic Updates Lumix Camera Line
Panasonic has unveiled its latest additions to its Lumix line of digital cameras, adding two new shooters each to its existing LZ, FS, and TZ series and introducing the FX35, a compact 10.1 megapixel unit that’s the first Lumix to feature a 25mm wide-angle lens.
First up, the LZ10 and LZ8 will join the Panasonic’s Lumix LZ series. Both new cameras feature optical image stabilization, intelligent ISO control and scene selection, face detection technology, 5× optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD display, and a fast auto-focus…along with a speaker to let users listen to music, and the capability to record WVGA (848 by 480 pixel) movies at 30 fps. The LZ8 will offer an 8.1 megapixel resolution and a 32mm wide angle lens, while the LZ10 will offer a 30 mm lens and a 10.1 megapixel resolution. Expect to see both in February for $179.995 and $249.95, respectively.
Sony Debuts Eight New Cyber-shot Cameras
Sony has unveiled a spate of new Cyber-shot cameras, totaling eight new models across the four branches of its Cyber-shot line. The S-series line will get the new S780 and S750, the H series will pick up the H10, the T-series adds the T300, and the W-series goes all out with the new W120, W130, W150, and W170.
Fujifilm Announces Five Stylish Cameras
Fujifilm has taken the wraps off five new digital cameras, ranging from entry level FinePix snappers and the 7.2 megapixel style-oriented FinePix Z10fd to the 8 megapixel FinePix S8000fd superzoom and the 12 megapixel F50fd.
Sony Goes Both Ways with HD Camcorders
This year’s rage amongst consumer camcorders is all about shooting high-definition video—but part of the dilemma is choosing a video format? Existing solutions have been shooting in HDV format, but several manufacturers have been backing the AVCHD format, based on MPEG-4 video. But Sony doesn’t want you to put off the purchase of an HD camcorder to capture your precious moments because of a silly little format war: instead, they’ve got both sides covered, with its UX line of camcorders storing video in HDV format, and the new HC series supporting AVCHD.
