USBConnect Mercury Makes 3G Easier

USBConnect Mercury Makes 3G Easier

Aiming to simplify the wireless connection process for customers who just need a plug-and-surf solution, AT&T on Tuesday introduced the USBConnect Mercury, an easy-to-use HSDPA broadband modem. By plugging into a common USB port and offering all the necessary setup software onboard, the Mercury aims to make tapping into AT&T’s 3G network as painless as possible.

Sierra Wireless manufactured the device with AT&T Communication Manager for PCs and Sierra Watcher for Macs preinstalled, meaning users won’t have to carry around an install CD to use the modem on most Windows or Mac machines. It also has a built-in microSD slot to double as a card reader for the type of storage most frequently used with mobile phones.

Mercury Interactive develops business management software focussed on payroll, inventory management, and sales tracking, and offers consulting and management services to enterprises. The deal marks HP’s biggest acquisition since the company’s envelopment of rival Compaq Computer in 2002.

Best Buy’s Magazine Scam

The Mercury News has a great question and answer column regarding the free magazine subscribtions that Best Buy is giving away at their stores. And by the sounds of it, the clerks have not been properly trained and reportedly are telling customers that a card will come to them in the mail asking if they would like to renew their magazine subscription.

The Truth: When your free 8 week subscription is up (only 2 issues), you will automatically get billed for the magazines subscription. How do they get your credit card information? Why, with the purchase you just made at Best Buy. Looks like the company’s hands are getting a little dirty…
