Man Charged With Biggest ID Theft In History

Man Charged With Biggest ID Theft In History

Albert Gonzales of Miami might never have thought it, but he’s making history. The 38-year-old, along with two unnamed Russians, has been charged with the largest identity theft in history – stealing data from 130 million credit and debit cards.

The Department of Justice alleges that Gonzales used an SQL injection attack to breach firewalls and steal the information. His targets included 7-Eleven, Hannaford Brothers, and card payment processor Heartland Payment Systems. Two other companies are mentioned but not named.

The stolen data was sent to servers in California and Illinois, as well as to Latvia, Holland and the Ukraine from where it could be sold.

Windows 7…Coming In August

Windows 7...Coming In August

Windows 7 in 2010? Forget that, it’s coming sooner, and will be in the stores and on new machines well before the end of the year to take advantage of the holiday market.

At the tail of a posting from senior vice president of the Windows and Windows Live engineering group Steven Sinofsky regarding the recent Release Candidate of the browser, comes the giveaway:

“If the feedback and telemetry on Windows 7 match our expectations then we will enter the final phases of the RTM (Release To Market) process in about 3 months. If we are successful in that, then we tracking to our shared goal of having PCs with Windows 7 available this Holiday season.”

Hands-On with the Lumix DMC-ZS3 and DMC-TS1

Hands-On with the Lumix DMC-ZS3 and DMC-TS1

On January 27th Panasonic and Sony unveiled a new high-def video format that may put a stake in the venerable camcorder’s silicon heart. Called AVCHD Lite, this subset codec of the AVCHD format found in today’s top camcorders (Canon HG21 and Sony SR12), is geared for digital cameras; the first ones arrive in April from Panasonic. Given that Sony is planning a big press conference at the upcoming Photo Marketing Association convention March 2nd, we’d safely bet they’ll unveil AVCHD Lite cameras too.

Two Sought By FBI For 2003 Hack

In 2003 the satellite TV market was pretty cutthroat, and retailers would do almost anything to have an edge on the competition. In the case of Web retailers Miami-based Rapid Satellite and Weaknees in LA, that anything included a denial of service hack attack that took their sites offline.

Now the FBI is looking for a Brit, Graham Walker, and a German, Axel Gembe, in connection with the attack. If convicted, they’re looking at 15 years in jail, the BBC reports. Two others, Jay Echouafni and Paul Ashley, have already been charged with conspiracy in the case. Ashley pleaded guilty and has served two years, while Echouafni is currently a fugitive.

Survey Ranks U.S. Cities with Home Networks

Survey Ranks U.S. Cities with Home Networks

A new market research study from MultiMedia Intelligence ranks U.S. cities on the basis of how wide their residents have adopted in-home networking during 2007. Perhaps not surprisingly, San Francisco topped the survey results, with some 28 percent of households having adopted home networking technologies. San Francisco was closely followed by Miami at 27 percent, and Los Angeles at 24 percent.

If you’re wondering why other well-known tech hubs didn’t even make the list, the survey apparently examined only top "designated marketing areas," a list of fourteen U.S. cities that omits places like Seattle and Austin as well as central cities like Denver, St. Louis, and Minneapolis.

T-Mobile Expanding 3G Network

T-Mobile Expanding 3G Network

Although it still hasn’t been officially announced, U.S. mobile operator T-Mobile is widely expected to introduce the first mobile phone build on Google’s Android platform next month, in the form of the HTC Dream. The potential problem with this scenario is that, while the Dream supports 3G data connectivity, T-Mobile is the number four mobile operator and only has 3G service up in a handful of markets. T-Mobile introduced 3G service in New York City in May and has since extended service to a handful of other markets, including Miami, Houston, Boston, San Diego, and Las Vegas.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld to Pitch Vista

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld to Pitch Vista

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft has signed on comedian Jerry Seinfeld as lead pitchman for Microsoft Vista. Microsoft has recently fired up a substantial new public relations campaign—including the now infamous Mojave Experiment—as the company tries to promote the benefits of Windows Vista to customers who have put off upgrading…or who have deliberately downgraded to Windows XP.

Enlisting Jerry Seinfeld would also help Microsoft hit back at Apple’s well-known “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” advertisements featuring comedian John Hodgman as the rather frumpy personification of a Windows PC.

American Airlines Debuts In-Flight Internet

Amercian Airlines has announced it is now offering in-flight Internet service on selected cross-country flights, powered by Aircell’s Gogo mobile broadband service. As of today, American is offering the service on 767-200 aircraft flying between New York and San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, and New York and Miami. The service costs $12.95 on flights more than three hours in duration, and is available to customers in all cabins.

Take-Two Takes on Chicago Transit Authority

Take-Two Takes on Chicago Transit Authority

When it comes to Grand Theft Auto, Chicago’s Transit Authority just can’t seem to make anybody happy. After accepting ads for GTA IV in April and plastering them all over the transit system, news reports criticized the CTA for advertising the violent game following crimes in Chicago. Bowing to public pressure, the Authority yanked the ads, a move GTA publisher Take-Two is now bringing the CTA to court over.

Universal (Finally) Goes Blu-ray

Universal (Finally) Goes Blu-ray

Universal Studios used to be the staunchest backer of Toshiba’s HD DVD high-definition disc technology, being the only movie studio that didn’t either sit on the fence and support both HD DVD and Blu-ray, or just skip HD DVD altogether and go for Blu-ray from day one. However, when Toshiba folded the HD DVD format back in February, Universal said it regretted that HD DVD hadn’t worked out, but wasted no time in saying it would begin issuing titles in the victorious Blu-ray format. The company is expected to unveil its first slate of Blu-ray titles today, with its first entry into Blu-ray media being Neil Marshall’s box office under-performer Doomsday this July.
