Although Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) is still the dominant display technology in the TV market, flat-panel technologies are taking increasing amounts of the market, according to In-Stat a high-tech marketresearch firm. In many countries, even some of those with digital terrestrial broadcasting, flat-panel TVs are the only digital TVs available. The growing popularity of flat-panel units ishighlighted by a recent In-Stat consumer survey. “Flat-panel TVs are overwhelmingly popular, with 66% of U.S. respondents who plan to buy a DTV in the next two years planning to purchase a flat-panelTV,” said Michelle Abraham, In-Stat analyst. “Plans for a flat-panel TV purchase were greater among younger respondents than older.”

Digital Radio Gaining Ground in U.S.
A recent survey of the high-tech market research firm’s Technology Adoption Panel of U.S. consumers indicates a growing awareness of digital satellite radio services. Half the survey’s respondentshad heard of satellite radio, and felt they had a good idea as to what it offers. iBiquity’s HD radio is less well known.
“However, price is still a barrier for many consumers, particularly with new HD radios,” said Michelle Abraham, In-Stat analyst. “Most consumers want to spend less than $200, and although satellite radio receivers are readily available for less than $100, HD radio receiver prices must decline before they are of interest to many consumers.”
Digital Satellite TV Continues To Grow
However, growth in some mature regional markets is slowing or stagnating, the high-tech research firm says.
“We expect 40 million worldwide DTH pay-TV subscribers to be added through 2008 as compared to the 61 million digital DTH pay-TV subscribers that were active at the end of 2003,” said In-Stat/MDR analyst Michelle Abraham. “In addition to an increasing subscriber base, the industry’s profits are on the rise due to reductions in equipment costs, increases in package pricing, and new revenues from new services and features.”
A recent In-Stat/MDR report also found:
— Worldwide subscription revenues are projected to grow to $70 billion in 2008.
High Expectations For DTV Sales
With visible results from the FCC mandate on integrating digital tuners in the U.S., increasing numbers of terrestrial broadcasters in Europe going digital, and the price differential between an analog and digital set coming down to a reasonable level, one can expect great things from this market. As a result, the high-tech market research firm forecasts that DTV set unit shipments will reach 93 million units in 2008, up from 17 million units in 2004. Unit shipments will be spread worldwide, with Asia being the largest of the DTV set markets.

Digital Radio Showing Steady Growth
The high-tech market research firm In-Stat/MDR has released a report on the digital radio industry. They believe that new content (stations that only exist in digital) and data services will drive consumer demand for radios. These factors are already at work in the digital satellite radio arena in the US and the digital terrestrial market in the UK, according to their research.
