Sony Vaio X Series

Sony Vaio X Series

Move over, MacBook Air. Although Dell already ripped up Apple’s envelope with the thinner-than-Air Adamo, Sony has set its own sights on the King of Thin, and the resulting Vaio X Series should put both imitator and imitated to shame.

Sony teased the Vaio X at this year’s IFA conference in Berlin, which essentially functions as the European version of CES. With no spec sheet or press release to be found, all we know are the bare essentials from Sony’s press conference: the screen spans 11.1 inches, the whole laptop measures only 0.55 inches thick (compared to 0.76 inches on the Air), and Sony has wrapped it in so much carbon fiber that its total weight comes to only 1.5 pounds. That’s just a smidge heavier than the almost-pocketable and highly flippable 1.4-pound Vaio P.

Walt Disney to Launch Cell Service in Japan

Walt Disney to Launch Cell Service in Japan

While Disney’s kid-targeted cell phone service here in the U.S. flopped a year ago, the company has packed up its bags and moved the operation to Japan, where it will ratchet up its target age to appeal to a new audience. According to the Wall Street Journal, Disney hopes its strong fan base of adult women in the country will help it gain footing there with a unique branded service.

Reports of a revided Disney Mobile for Japan surfaced at the end of 2007.

Put Some Junk in Your iPod Funk

Here at Digital Trends, there are some items we sit on for a while. Sometimes news is embargoed by a company; sometimes we have to hold something waiting for images or information. Heck, sometimes things aren’t sourced well enough that we feel comfortable running with it, and, sometimes, things just don’t seem important enough to write up.

Then, there are items we hold back as

Disney Portable DVD Players Recalled

Disney Portable DVD Players Recalled

The U.S. Consumer Products and Safety Commission has announced a recall of about 102,000 Disney-branded portable DVD players. Batteries sold with the players can overheat and possibly burst when recharging, potentially leading to injury or damage. The commission has received 17 reports of batteries overheating, with three reports of minor skin irritation and three reports of damage to nearby property.

Consumers are advised to stop using the battery packs and contact the battery packs’ distributor, Florida’s Memcorp., Inc. for replacement. Memcorp can be reached at 800/326-0315, or via www.disneyelectronics.com.

Disney Launches Preschool Online Service

Think maybe your preschool-aged child isn’t spending enough time with the computer? Is perhaps falling behind his or her peers in technology savvy? Or maybe you’re worried Johnny’s mousing skills just aren’t up to snuff for a four year-old?

Never fear, Disney’s got the solution for you! Disney Online today launched a new “broadband subscription product” dubbed Playhouse Disney Preschool Time Online. For $49.95 a year (a free trial is available) Disney lets kids interact with their favorite Disney Channel characters in a “safe, ad-free” environment filled with fun and engaging activities, puzzles, and games which entertain preschoolers while developing important “kindergarten readiness skills.”

Disney to Sell $50 Mix Sticks MP3 Players

Walt Disney Company announced it plans to sell $50 flash-based portable music players for kids and "tweens" called Mix Sticks in major retailers and at its online store beginning in mid-October.

The players will be available in four styles—Chrome, Forever Princess, That’s So Raven, and Sassy Pixie—and support MP3 and WMA audio files, as well as standard data storage. Mix Sticks feature playback controls which (surprise surprise!) form a silhouette head of Mickey Mouse; the units ship with a 128 MB capacity (Disney says this is about 60 songs, but it probably closer to 30 using common encoding techniques) but are expandable to 1 GB. Mix Sticks will also support Disney’s Mix Clips, memory cards preloaded with WMA/MMC digital albums featuring music from Radio Disney, That’s So Raven, and other House of Mouse offerings. Mix Clips will be priced at $15 each.

Radio Disney Does iTunes

Will Mickey Mouse soon sport an iPod? Not yet, but a seed has been planted in the digital media relationship between Disney and Apple as the two companies announced today that Radio Disney tunes will be available for download in the iTunes store.

Radio Disney specifically said, according to a press release, that listeners of their nationwide radio network can now find the music they hear on Apple’s iTunes store in a special section. Also available will be special features and exclusives.

Motorola i730 review

Quote from the review at Howard Chui:

“If you’re itching for a new phone but can’t leave because you need iDEN’s push to talk service (and don’t want to use a Mickey Mouse solution like Verizon’s PTT service) the wait for a new phone is finally over. So was the i730 worth the excruciatingly long wait? Read on!”

Disney launches electronics line

The colorful, whimsical collection of TVs (one with mouse-ear speakers on top), DVD players, personal digital radios, CD boom boxes and clock radios will go on sale in prominent displays at Circuit City, Sears and Target stores.

The audio and video line — priced from $29.99 to $119.99 — comes in three design schemes: red and black (classic Disney colors), green and white (Buzz Lightyear for boys) or pink and blue (Princess for girls). Disney characters appear with on-screen controls — change the volume on one TV, for example, and Mickey Mouse crosses the screen.
